G'day,
Here's a link to a number of transmission filter photos that you may find interesting.
Note that the filter material is paper which; in my opinion, makes external filters redundant.
Oops - I better add a caveat - IF you change the OEM filter as required by the MM! ;-)

The biggest, I think, are trusted brands switching to cheap production and sticking the down-graded item in the same old box. In the electrical and plumbing industry, I see this a lot. Your old stand-bys just might be junk.

Thanks Rob!
So to confirm, what should be the OD of the intake tube to ensure it will stay put? I think I have seen that number posted here before when this mess first was discovered. In 2013 I changed my fluid & filter and I do recall it was a little loose but didn't think to much about at the time. Now I'm a little worried and want to check. Although I have put on over 5K since then.

kerry pinkerton wrote on Mon, 23 March 2015 05:06Rob, how do you open up oil and tranny filters without filling them up with chips from the saw?
I use tin snips or a wood chisel. A big tube cutter would be nice for the oil filter if you have one.

Kerry,
While I was at Manny's on the way back to Sydney I picked up a used trans filter and I think that the seam that holds the inlet
cover to the outlet housing could be removed with a flap wheel in a 4 inch grinder without getting crap in the filter.
If you have a filter handy see if you agree.

Kerry,
For oil filters I have a tool works like a tube cutter that cuts the "can" off the filter "face" that the O-ring is in.
The trans filters I just cut open with a 1 mm cut off "blade" in a 4" Harbor Freight grinder. I only wanted to see how they were
made. I thought they were what I call "horsehair filters" like the old oil filled air filters of the 1940's. As you can see from the
photos I was WRONG!
I'll have to look at the one filter I kept to see if there is some way to remove the paper element without contaminating it with
metal particles.
