This is an interesting scam.
I received this in the morning mail:

Interesting since we have not traveled a toll road since September and I have a receipt for that.

Attached was a zipped *.doc file. I don't use and never read *.doc because they can easily contain malware.
Guess what, I ported it off to an isolated system and tried to open it. The Flags When Up, so I shut it down.

The domain is the property of a local church group, and my reply to him bounced.

Matt:

Just about anything to get a back door on your machine, and they can and will be a patient lot, and get you in the end.

This is the reason I don’t use Office. Ever.

There is an old quote from the President of Digital Computer where he said he could not see any reason anyone would want a personal computer in their home, and I think we are rapidly getting there - with iPads and “appliances” Most of us don’t need much more than a way to surf the web, and the rest is just a tool waiting to be exploited.

Thanks for bringing this latest scam to light.

I have used MS Office on dozens of computers for as long as it has been available. Never had a problem. Basic virus and spamware protection are all you need. Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, and SuperAntiSpyware, all free, will stop anything. Don't be alarmist and say that Office is bad and PC's are dangerous. It just isn't true.

The "true" toll assessment done by the Dallas (TX) turnpike authority uses photos of your license plate when you go through on any of "their" toll roads. They appear to have taken out all the tollbooths to speed handling of traffic.

Legitimate agencies WILL track down vehicles that traverse those roads which do not have the electronic devices that report directly to their overall system and bill the vehicle's owner through YOUR state's data file.

I used the George Bush Tollway going to a ham radio fest in 2012 and 2013 and got dunned in mid and late 2014 for these trips. Each contained a picture of my license plate and were valid charges.

The Dallas Turnpike now directly reads my Oklahoma Pike Pass so the charges are made directly to that account. The Kansas Turnpikes have recently established a similar plan with Oklahoma. Works great for me as I occasionally use the toll roads in all three states.

I have also received SCAM attempts, but know that I am truly up to date, so those go to the great bit bucket in the sky! The REAL reports will have your license plate picture displayed without opening an attachment as far as I know.

If you have not used the Dallas (or similar) system, just ignore those and/or report them as PHISHING/SCAM attempts to your Internet Service Provider or even the Attorney General of your state.

More info regarding my earlier message (below). I went to my records and had filed the "true" billing in with my Oklahoma Pike Pass billings.

The agency is the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA). The "true" billing was done through U.S. Mail to my home state vehicle registration address.

Whatever you got via eMail is almost certainly a scam or phishing attempt. I suspect criminal activity within the NTTA!

David:

I was not alarmist, and did not say it’s bad.

I did say that I don’t use it. For that matter, I don’t use Windows, either. (caveat - I have a couple of windows machines around to run the software to fix the Audi’s and for Ford’s online manuals and ODBII interface)

Few people have need for all the bells and whistles in Word or Excel. With that power comes security vulnerabilities.

It does not take much of a programmer to write a macro in many parts of the Office suite that will do about anything you could do with a keyboard programmatically.

The discussion last night at a family gathering was to have the rest of the family buy Macintosh computers so they would stop calling my brother in law (VP of Technology for a large banking concern) and call the retired Dotcom guy (me) instead.

FWIW, I’m positively impressed by Microsoft Live - and as long as they don’t make the same terms of service changes so they look like Google, it might be a great long term option.

Again, not alarmist - I just have more privacy concerns than some.

You may already know this - but the "From" field in an email is very easily spoofed and likely not of any value. If you look at the full headers of the message - the true origins of the email will be indicated. It's sometimes interesting to do a geographic search on the first IP address (that is - if that kind of thing interest you!).

Any links that are contained within the "attack" are likely addresses of compromised servers, as well. In many cases - the true owner of the compromised site has no idea that their web engine is being used to run a phishing scam...

The one interesting thing about your email - they used your correct first name and also used the correct name of the spoofed sender. That's interesting.

Beg to differ. I manage a network of over 500 PCs, terminal servers and other networked devices. In the past three weeks I've seen four incidents of these zipped malware payloads getting by 1) Microsoft Exchange Online Protection (Microsoft's anti-malware, anti-spam paid service), 2) Sophos anti-virus endpoint protection, and 3) network layer security devices. In all four cases the malware got past every defense. I submitted the payloads to Sophos and they thanked me for the submission of something they hadn't seen yet. In each case it took about 3-4 hours after we saw the first appearance of each of these zips before Microsoft started blocking them.

(BTW, David, Malwarebytes and MSE both missed these attachments as well, I checked...)

These zero-day exploits can be stopped only by the meat computer - the one between the user's ears - and sometimes not even then. Some of the holes in IE and mail clients are exploitable simply by previewing a message - without even clicking on the attachment.

Matt,

I got one too, but but mine was from Terrence Heller. You can see how important I am. Ha. I don't open zipped or .doc files from unknowns either. It is amusing how hard they try.

Jim, I didn't say those programs would block that attachment. Like others have said, you have to use the head as well. I was just commenting on blanket MS Office condemnation. As for Mac's, I have nothing against them for what they are, but I would like to see someone build a kick-ass Mac gaming machine from scratch ;o)

Even authentic bills from the toll authority can be scams of another sort. I got one from EZ Pass saying I went through a toll both in south Florida without paying. It then provided the license number of the vehicle in question. The number sounded familiar to me but it wasn't for any of my cars...it was for one of my boat trailers! No reason they didn't know that tiny detail, they checked who owned that tag but didn't bother to check the vehicle! I asked for a copy of the actual picture and turns out it was an out-of-state tag on a VW! I can't help but wonder how many people simply pay the fee and forget about it!
