Hi Joe,

Obviously very much a matter of personal choice and hearing. We like a variety of music but mostly classical, jazz or blues. Neither of us are much for earth quake sub-woofer blats.

In-dash units now seem focused on iPods or other compressed music sources for input and music storage, screens for navigation or DVDs, and sub-woofers for the artificial low sounds. The amp and tuner sections are cheap and mostly contained on a chip or two. I personally prefer 80s and 90s small, high quality stereo systems run off of an inverter. The Nakamichi Sound Space 1 works really well in a GMC. The head unit and the two separate speaker/amp units are all the same square size (around 6" square and 2-3" deep as I recall). They blow away most car audio systems for properly balanced sound. I have one in the Clasco with the speaker/amp units mounted on articulated arms on the forward ends of each upper cabinet so the speakers can face forward, towards the middle of the driver/passenger compartment or turned around to face into the main living area. The audio quality is superb and the styling is perfect for the gray/chrome look of the Clasco interior. The head unit c
ontains the tuner, an excellent CD drive and aux input, and can be controlled via a remote. I seldom use the in-dash stereo unit at all. I tried the larger Sound Space 5, but it was out of scale big for a GMC interior. Great sound, just too large for my taste.

In the Royale, I use a TV stereo sound bar mounted above the rear window as that floor plan features a large U shaped lounge at the rear where we hang out. The sound bar has both a tuner and an aux input and is also remote controlled. If I feel ambitious I sometimes will run the audio out from the satellite receiver over to the sound bar when we watch a movie. The Royale has a fancy high powered Sony in-dash unit and I went to all the trouble to put in Boston Acoustics speakers in the stock locations front and rear - but we seldom ever turn it on as the sound bar has better acoustics for our old ears.

From 1998 to 2002 we full timed in a rolling condo that had a Bose Lifestyle hidden multi thousand dollar stereo system designed for a home theater buried somewhere. When it functioned well it was great but it did not stand up well to the stresses of a motor coach going down the road and we had to constantly chase hums, sub-woofer glitches and odd noises. I would never recommend systems of that type for our use.

The recent speaker wire discussion brought the question to mind.

Head unit, amps, speakers?

Size, placement, power?

What do you listen to, and how well does your system work with the config?

Torn between 4" coax in the stock ceiling and sub in the seat base, or just adapting a home theater in a box speaker setup using the small satellite
speakers on/ in/around the dash and the sub behind the seat. Not wanting to hack up the interior just yet.

And then there is the dash system & separate coach system vs integrated one system for the whole coach...

Thoughts?
