The pressboard in my original, and repainted (by P.O.), kitchen counter top is literally an explody mess, and expanding into my window shade surrounds. (From previous leaks.)

Standard depth preformed countertops do not seem to be an option as they are not deep enough, and the backsplash has to be altered to accommodate the window and power outlet.

I have read about people using old desks, and I'm curious what other materials are a good economic (read: inexpensive) option.

I took the dimensions to a local shop and they quoted me $400 to cut a remnant that I would then need to install. Didn't sound too exorbitant, but curious if that sounds high or low to others more familiar with that material. Gap where the stove is, hole where the sink is and a two inch splashguard down the back.

Thanks.

Another alternative might be from a company called, "Granite Solutions.". I have redone two kitchens with this product and I was very happy with the results.
It consists of a thin layer of a man-made material of ground stone and a binding material. I can put a very hot pot on it and have no damage. One top has been down for at least 10 years, and 3 renters. Shows no damage, and no loss of color or surface. Wife happy = I'm happy.
You will need to replace your current top with a layer of plywood to support the product. Suggest marine grade, but probably not important.
This may be at a competitive price point.

Tom,

This email tweaked my memory, when I was down at the COOP several years ago JimB had a dinette table made out of Corian. IT WAS
HEAVY! IIRC he had large sections of the underside milled out to reduce the weight but it was still too heavy and he never installed
it. I spotted it in one of his storage rooms.

The product you mention below "sounds" like it would weigh a lot less.

One should keep in mind that GMC specified no more than a 250 lb difference right side to left side on the front axle and 600 lb on
the rear axles.

Regards,
Rob M.

I have successfully painted my coach’s counter tops with one of the paints specifically made for counter top use, a great $20 upgrade. If I was wanted a new counter top on the cheap, after I fixed whatever destroyed the last one I would make it out of MDF and put a really nice paint job on it. This assumes I have a leak ‘free’ motor coach that sees occasional use. MDF will quickly get ruined if exposed to constant moisture. However it would be a lot less than $400 and may even save a little weight. If the coach was used heavily I would spend the $400. Just my 2 cents.

Several years ago I bought five 4X10 sheets of something similar to Corian.
I still have four left. All five sheets ran about $125 total. I loaded
them in my Ford Ranger and brought them home.

I bought some weneer plywood to finish out a set of craigslist ex kitchen cabinets in our living-dog-tv room and it wasn't greatly expensive. Finished the veneer side with polyurethane varnish, it looks pretty good and it was fairly easy. I suspect you could take a sabre saw and make a counter top with it. It's available in veneer to match about any cabinet face. If you like laminate, and have a router to do the edges, get cheaper plywood and glue Formica<tm> to the top and round the edges with the router. My stuff isn't close to Jerry's standards but my whole place is done in Early Okie and Dog Fur anyway.

I've had a Corian kitchen countertop in ANNIE for the past 13 years and it
still looks new. It is heavy but once in who knows. You will have to think
about weight balance side to side and front to back. Sounds like the shop
is giving you a decent price. I'd go for it again (if that is what you want).
I've also installed a butcher block countertop which also came out nice.

i will try to see what i spent on my remnant.. i was thinking ~125.00

my counter top is about 1/2 inch thick, they put an edge around the front
and side for me.. (yes the side was a mistake the original was flush) .
they took the cut outs for the sink and stove and placed little rubber feet
on them. good for cutting board or serving tray.
he is a pic of when i just installed it. (it was not heavy)

My beloved PO put in Corian countertops in the galley and bath, and they look great years later. I have no idea what they weigh, but I'm going to choose to believe he chose the carbon fiber nanotube option... Wink

We have corian countertops in the Buskirk Stretch.

We have a dry bath layout and this is the one piece bath vanity.

In the Kitchen area we have 2 countertops, the Cooktop side.

The Sink Side, the sinks in both the bath and kitchen are one piece construction.

The actual thickness of the corian countertops typically are 5/8 to 3/4 inch thick and the edges are built up to make it look thicker. Although the weight of corian is somewhat more than particle board types that you can purchase from the big box store it is really not that much more in weight. I had to replace the cooktop side and the bath side. The cooktop side had a crack in the corner and the bath sink was too big and we put a small sink that gave us counter space back. I recommend corian or similar type materials is you want a durable type counter tops. We have a friend who is also a GMC’er who has a light weight kitchen counter top that was built by a company in Elkhart that uses a ridge foam as the base material with formica and solid plastic type sink material to make a light weight counter top and sink combo in one piece. Weights about 1/2 as much particle board construction. Drawback is that it is in the same cost category at corian. He got his as a friendship deal. As of right now they produce counter tops for the OEM RV manufactures. I can check and see if he has any contact info with him as he is also here in Tucson where we are staying. Would I use Corian again!

I fabricated and installed a Corian top in my coach a few years ago. It is not hard to work with if you have some basic knowledge, skills, and tools (router, sander, the proper glue gun, etc.). The price they are quoting you sounds reasonable to me. It is kind of heavy, but keep in mind that you are removing the old top, which weighs something too. There is a solid surface material available that is thinner (about 3/16") that goes on sort of like a laminate. It is much lighter in weight.

I think that's a pretty fair price if all you have to do is install the fabricated piece. I bought a overstock/scrap piece
from solidsurface.com, which has a big selection of colors/styles. It was about $360 delivered, but then I had to do all the work.
Since I have lots of woodworking tools, it wasn't hard to do, but a prefabricated top with all the cutouts and edges done
would have been well worth the extra $40.
