Can any of you tell me exactly how long the roller tube on a Zip Dee Awning needs to be so the head castings end up in the correct place? I'm cutting down an awning and would like to get it as close to factory that I can.

Thanks.

Galen,

Be careful when you cut it as it might be necessary to cut both ends. The reason I say that is I am not sure how the internal spring
and shaft connect to the tube inside.

Might be a good idea to call Zip Dee.

Galen,

My ZipDee measures
17' 11 3/4" inside end cap to inside end cap.
17' 10 1/4" end to end on the roller tube
17' 7 3/4" end to end on the aluminum protective cover
Hope it helps.
Rob has a good idea about calling ZipDee

Thanks a lot for the info. I need to call them anyway and get the prices for the upper and lower arm bars.

I'll post what I find out.

My zip dee awning had a bent tube from the awning filling up with rain. Probably over 50 gallons or 800 lbs. I stopped at the factory in Illinois last September and they replaced the tube.
I just measured it and my measurements are just a little different from the ones Terrance just reported.

I have the aluminum cover at 17’ 8-1/2”. The main tube at 17’ 9-3/4”.
So it would be best to call the factory
In my files I had a note that the factory said the main tube was 17’-10”. A variance of 1/4” either way would be no problem.

The spring has a notched wheel (like a gear with large wide teeth). The springs just slides into the front end of the tube and a tooth engages pop rivets that are put through the side of the tube.
I have my old tube at home yet. The rivets are located in line with the length of the tube. One is 49-1/4” from the end. The second is 49-11/16” from the end. The third is 50-3/16” from the end and the fourth is 50-9/16’ from the end.
As the spring winds the “gear” moves toward the front end of the tube so having the rivets spaced out allows the gear to stay engaged. The rivets were fair long, probably 1/2” or 3/4” so that they protruded inside tube for the gear to engage them.

If you need instructions to mount the awning go here:

That is a post from John Wright on the GMC pictures site.

If I can help you as you are doing the work, let me know.

Thanks Emory for posting the instructions. They are a PDF file and you need to open the multimedia file and they will open. Has all the dimensions for installation and Emory's dimensions are pretty close.

Thanks Emery.

I called Zip Dee. The awning was off an Airstream. It's basically brand new and has only been out a few times. I was surprised at the the cost of the upper and lower bars - they were cheaper than I expected, by a lot. The guy I talked to was very helpful when I explained what I am going to do. Here's the measurements he gave me.

17' 11.25" - Overall Awning length (as measured from mounting point to mounting point as depicted in the install doc; all measurements take from this base)
Overall - 1.5" - Roller tube length (17' 9.75")
Overall - 3.5" - Fabric length (11' 7.75")

I'll be shortening things up this evening. Thanks for all the assistance.
