I’m curious if anyone has seen tangible results from installing the radiator baffles. I see Ken H’s excellent photographs showing his mud-flap baffles, and the reasoning is sound, but I’m wondering if they really make a difference?

Making a set of baffles would be kind of fun.

Larry,

I put a pair I got from Frank Jenkins made out of tractor trailer mud flaps on Double Trouble and yes it made a difference; did I
record before and after temps, no.

GMC incorporated them, however, I don't know when they did that.

Regards,
Rob M.

They were incorporated when then went to the 403 engine at TZE167V101285 for the motorhome, TZE337V101287 for the 23’ TransMode and TZE367V101312. There is a drawing that shows the baffle layout, but I have not been able to locate as of yet. The baffles do make a difference as they control the air flow and force it thru the radiator and not allow it to escape around the radiator.

The coach I'm presently working on
has a brass radiator, no dash a/c, and 7 blade steel OEM fan, w/ 1 piece
molded plastic shroud. It has a fuel injected, cammed, 455 w/ K-a heads.
Radiator was re-cored with another row of tubes. It always would run over
205° at 65 - 70 mph, not towing or climbing. Owner fabricated wing type
deflectors like the Royale 78 coaches have. Temps were lowered to 185° at
same speed. Yes, they work very well. I think that the "possum scoop" type
made from truck mud flap material will show similar results. Your
experiences may vary.

Larry,

The Chevrolet P-30 Chassis Owner's Manual, available from bdub.net, has a
detailed appendix of recommendations to upfitters about radiator ducting.
That, plus my experience with other motorhomes on that chassis, made me
very surprised at the absence of baffles on my '76 GMC. I'm still
surprised at the absence of a top baffle. However, since I never had an
overheating problem, I didn't install them until 2012:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6117-grille-to-radiator-duct.html

I'm glad I've got them now, but I really can't testify to any cooling
improvement -- I didn't have a cooling problem before and I still don't --
my temperature stays at 196*F to 198*F. But I do have a convenient shelf
for tools when working under the hoods, and some handy storage space (I
keep a small plastic dishpan on the top baffle for spare oil, etc.). I
also an additional obstacle to remove when I want to work in front of the
radiator (which is fortunately not often). I will say that I wouldn't
bother with only side baffles.

I plan to copy Ken's baffle ideas. But find this P30 drawing an interesting comparison.

Here the horizontal baffle is at the bottom, negating my JR Wright air dam. None at the top. And the triangle shape of the side baffles would seem to not extend to the grill?
