For those of you who will use the I-10 routing to get to International. Mississippi has a beautiful State Park, located in Waveland. The previous park was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. This is a total re-build. All new facilities, located across the street on the beach. All RV parking is on solid pads. I will overnight there on Tuesday, March 24. It about 150 miles from Waveland to Patterson, a very easy drive.

Only 34 days to International.

For those of you slow on the trigger, we now have a expected total of 9 GMC's for this little stop over. Plenty of spots available right now.
Most GMC's are located on the Barataria Bay Loop - sites 026 to 047.
All sites are paved, 30/50 amp service, water and sewage. This is a totally new park. Very nice and clean bath houses.
Walk to the beach and relax your soul. Casino within 2 miles, for those who care.
Pot Luck on Tuesday night.
P.S. If you have reserved an site, please P.M. me so we know how many to plan for on the pot luck - hot dogs and hamburgers.

Someone riding in the last vehicle to leave needs to video the caravan
leaving -- and someone needs to record our arrival at Patterson. Presuming
we can maintain the convoy.

Ken,

I would not recommend trying to convoy 9-12 GMCs in one element. ...
especially thru New Orleans. Keep in mind that we will have cars
and tows also in the mix. I would recommending elements of no more
than 3 to 4 vehicles each. I lead a convoy of 10-12 GMCs into Dothan
for the Sunshine Statesmen and it was PITA when you started to come up
on traffic lights and small towns on two lane roads. Tough keeping it
together on the four lane highways south of NO.

Just my two cents.

I imagine New Orleans would be a lil different than Albuquerque wouldn't
it, Ken? That was fun!

Jim,

You're probably right, especially with NO to traverse. We had a large
convoy (20, IIRC) from Oklahoma City to Albuquerque a few years back.
Being on the Interstates most of the way, it worked pretty well, and having
a long stretch of desert to cross for the final leg was also helpful as the
convoy grew. But even with those advantages, the group got separated
before we reach Albuquerque and the photo plane sent out to meet us didn't
get the desired footage. :-(

It will still be fun to try, if we can avoid angering too many other
motorists. :-)

I lived in Louisiana mainly the Baton Rouge area back in the 80’s. I was there in January 2014 and spend several days visiting friends and good food. You want to avoid the trip on I-10 thru NO. Just get on I-12 and bypass NO, unless your going to stop and spend some time (6-8 hours) and have a place to park and stay I would avoid it. Not friendly to large vehicle in the French Quarter. JMPO

Ada lived in NO for three years as a project manager rebuilding the
power grid and I went to college in Louisiana back in the 60s. On
the way home from the Branson rally, we stayed in a new RV resort
a few blocks from the French Quarter. Actually that is the name of
it (French Quarter RV Resort). We'll be staying there on the way home
after this rally too visiting friends. I was thinking I-10 to I-310
south past the airport and then US 90 into Patterson. Thoughts?????

JR,

Right next to the French Quarter RV Resort is a large parking lot:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/French+Quarter+RV+Resort/@29.961227,-90.0724878,147m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x2202ee3e6151544

I believe you can park a RV there.

Someone who is going to Patterson could call the FQRVR and ask them.

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,

While the lot is large, I don't think it would be quite a safe
place to boondock. The building next to the RV Park is an abandoned
supermarket destroyed by Katrina. All the lots around it was for the
supermarket.

My two cents.

Jim,

I was responding to JR noting that there was no place to PARK a RV in the French Quarter, I apologize if I was not clear; I did not
mean to imply it was OK to boondock in that lot.

However, IIRC there is a police station within a block of that parking lot.

Bypassing N.O. by using I-12 is an option, but adds mileage and time to the trip. I'm sure that there will be an interesting discussion at Buccaneer about a departure routine.
Coming into Buccaneer from I-10 might be easier using exit 2, instead of Exit 13. 13 goes through parts of Waveland, Exit 2 is a no obstacle road. This will add about 10 miles to the trip. The road to the park going through Waveland is ill-marked. EXit 2 also has the Mississippi Welcome Station for those quick trips to the restroom.
I drove both methods this month.

Is N.O. really that bad to drive through? How can it be any worse than
North L.A. I have spent 3 hours in L.A. traffic to go less than 9 miles,
and there were NO WRECKS or Construction, just Friday night commute
traffic. Same thing in west Chicago, Seattle, and several other large U.S.
cities. Is it only perceived to be bad, or is it genuinely bad? Western
GMCers wouldn't like to get the wrong opinion about Louisiana. (Grin)

Years back I drove my GMC through the French Quarter pulling a toad. Burbon St, Basin St etc. they are very narrow streets and you'd better hope there is not a delivery truck parked on one side as you won't be able to get through. I held up traffic for 15 minutes waiting for a truck to move. Had some very unhappy drivers behind me.

That is probably an area you should avoid unless you share walking. Canal St and other wide avenues through NO present no problems and we were lucky to find parking on the street about 4 blocks from the Quarter.

Just looking at it, the move appears to be 10 to 610 back to 10 to 310 to US 90 to Patterson. Much of that stretch of 90 is four lane limited access, some isn't. I'll roll with the crowd as long as Col Ken isn't after a land speed record Smile
I'll be skipping the French Quarter in the GMC - matterofact, I'll be skipping getting off the freeway till the end of 310.

If you are on the fence about this little no-host rally, there are now 10 coaches coming to Buccaneer State Park. Make your reservation at the Mississippi State Park site and come on down.
There will be a "pot luck" hamburger and hot dog cook-out, Tuesday evening.
