Hey All;
I'm here out in the desert at Quartzsite. I've been looking at a solar setup that is like a big suitcase. Controller is included. It connects to the battery bank by a set of alligator clips. So what one does is to open it up (it folds up more like a camp table), connect the 2 alligator clips, point it at the sun and enjoy the free (sort of) energy. There are various sizes, but each cost about $1/watt. What smart questions should I be asking while looking at these??? Thanks.

You may want a way to lock them so they don't 'walk' away. The suitcase panels normally are pretty low wattage and more money compared to standard mounted panels.

Hello Gary,
check http://gonewiththewynns.com - they have a pretty extensive solar
setup, and details on what to look out for. Among the portal PV setup
they also have glued on PV panels on the curved roof of their RV.
Another good source of information is the http://technomadia.com page.
Both not GMC related, but helpful nonetheless.

the problem with solar is they are not really large enough for use of most coaches.
before you go looking, you need to determine what you need in power usage.
You would not be able to run the AC without the generator, that's a given.
Most people have already changed out the lights for LED's to lower the power usage.
I have talked to a few people that have it and if I recal, the minimum size panel was 200 watts and they were considering getting another panel.
As I have been told....
1 12v 100AH battery will supply 5 amp for 20 hours.
5 amps = 5x12v or 60 watts. now this is using on a 12 v system
If you have an inverter, the numbers jump up.
If you want 5 amps of 120v ac from an inverter, you need 50 amps of 12v dc from the battery to supply it, minimum. And of course, you need to be able to restore that power with enough Solar panel power.
Just what I thought.
As said before, most of those portable units are really low powered and seem to be priced kind of high. But you really need to know what you need and what you are using before asking questions or they may confuse you. I'd go inquire but only as an information collecting visit, don't buy until you know what you need.

Hey;
Thanks for all of the info. I'm going to go to Bill the Solar Guy here in Quartzsite and see what he recommends. Thanks again.

What system is that? Less than $1 per watt is extremely cheap especially
if not buying in bulk.

Stan,
Problem: The above is correct and I am not going to go into Peukert numbers, but that twenty hour rate is to 10.5V which is Dead Seriously dead, not just nearly but really most completely Dead.
Most common lead/acid batteries will be damaged if discharge that far. A good rule is 50% (about a 12.0V terminal) for standard, and 11.8 for real deep cycle(like golf cart grade) batteries.
The entire life of a common battery exists between 12.6 and 12.0V outside of that, things don't go well.
You have to keep the in mind with battery banks.
