Bob,
Someone put Royale decals on a 23 foot coach. Being a 1978, most likely if is(was) a Birchaven, as by then the only major non-GM upfitter was Coachman. For Coachman products: _ALL_ 26 foot coaches were Royales and _ALL_ 23 foot coaches were Birchavens.
All of the Coachman furnishings were the same design Royale to Birch. Quality of the parts are normally fairly high... but sometimes the installation wasn't the same quality.

The simple explaination being the most likely, I'd have to agree.
However, the number of known reverse floor plan brichavens shows Coachmen either wasn't documenting everything they did, or would let you order things not on the menu. Not hard to imagine the phone call: "23 foot royale? No problem sir,,,, bob, just cut that side stripe down"
In the tape stripe package 70's? Could have even been done at the dealer. I've seen stranger requests for new vehicles.
Be interesting to see if it still has the coachmen label on the inside, and what it says...
76 Birchaven - "Wicked Mistress" - New engine, trans, alum radiator, brakes, Sully airbags, fuel lines, seats, adult beverage center... those Coachmen guys were really thinking about us second hand owners by including that beverage center...

Royales had solid wood cabinet doors, Birchavens used particle-board cores. You can see the particle-board in the routed groove next to the raised panel even if the cabinets have been painted.

from another post...
I installed the EU6500is using a modified onan drawer, custom exhaust pipe and remote mounted muffler. It is fed from the rear tank using a pulse pump powered by a custom vent in the valve cover. 240v. Eco mode will not ramp up fast enough to start my rooftop, but standard mode will run both. Sips fuel and very quiet. I need to modify the enclosure to preserve the proper airflow. You are not supposed to run one of these with the access door open. Integral cooling and ducting paths are integral to the chassis. I cut mine apart to weldto my modified onan slide out, it's close, but get surging at light loads...I was able to incorporate the start stop from original interior onan switch, but needed to add a Separate run indicator light because it is opposite polarity at the switch. I'll see what pictures I have.
