Finally after 6 weeks of waiting we finally got on the road. Headed to FL. Got 500 mi under our belt today stopping in Oakland Il. for the night. When we stopped for gas today I noticed that the motor turned over awful slow on the restart, so checked the date on the battery. CRAP!!!This battery is 7 yrs old!!.Geese...time passes fast when you're having fun!! Guess I'll go looking for one tomorrow. Also noticed during a walk around that there are corn kernels in the Onan exhaust pipe...LOL. Wonder what is going to happen when I start it...heh...heh...heh.

Larry,

Hope you'll stop by! We've got a WalMart full of batteries & we can back
the GMC onto the rack so you can stand up while looking in the Onan exhaust
pipe. :-)

My 7 cars and 2 trucks use 11 batteries. I have had good luck with Costco and Walmart. Walmart is MUCH easier to find OPEN when your on the road. (Longer hours, more locations, right off the highway)>

Ken, we are north of Chattanooga in Stone Fort State Park. Got tired and decided to stop early and get a good walk in. So we will probably fly by you tomorrow, as we need to be at daughters home in Jacksonville by tomorrow night. Thanks for the offer. Next time for sure....

Is it raining up there? Has been here all afternoon. I don't know the
forecast so just hope it will not plague you. Be careful out there.

We'll count on next time,

Ken H.

It was a clear beautiful day...our drive from Champaign to here. No rain here yet, but park ranger said forecast is predicting freezing rain for tomorrow, maybe a little snow. Hope we will be ahead of it.
See you two at Patterson.

Larry, if you are at Old Stone Fort in Manchester, you might get some snow tonight. They are predicting it and if it happens MountEagle might be nasty or even closed. We don't have the equipment to deal the frozen stuff. There is a way around it I can tell you about or you can head back toward Nashville, get on the 840 bypass and take I65 to Birmingham and then I20 to Atlanta.

I'm on the Blacklist. Safe travels!

Kerry,
Mounteagle is just down the road from us. Is it a mountain pass or something? Park Ranger didn't seem to think things were going to be to bad....but then what does he know...

MontEagle is a BIG mountain...actually it is the Cumberland Plateau. It's steep enough that on the east side there are THREE runaway truck ramps. It's just a long hard pull, I'm guessing a thousand feet above your current height. Your Caddy will handle it easily but it might be slick and it only takes one truck spinning out to turn it into a parking lot.

The latest forecast is backing off the frozen stuff so hopefully it will be nothing. If it does get messy, you can come down through Manchester, to Tulluhoma, Lynchburg (Jack Daniels), Fayettville, Huntsville, and then either back up US 72 to Chattanogga or down YS431 to Anniston and I20.

Only someone from Alabama or Georgia would be afraid of Monteagle when
the weather is iffy. You'll hear a lot of chatter about it on the
Nashville TV stations during the weather. However, for someone from
Wisconsin, you'll think you're on holiday.

It has been my experience that it is the inexperienced truck drivers to
watch for. There will be one in 30 in that situation. You'll have little
problems. By the way, there's the rest stop at the top.

Monteagle is a winding climb over one side of a big hill (mountains are
out west). Once at the peak, you start the process all over again. Just
watch the speed going down so you don't have to use the run-off spots
(of which there are two). It is generally three lanes going down. There
is no "pass" as such. Rocks will be on the right going up and on the
left coming down.

It is a wide band of precipitation heading that way. This morning it
stretched from Pensacola to Houston across the gulf.

Kerry is right. If you get some icing, MontEagle will be bad. Not because it's all that difficult but because this area just isn't equipped to deal with it and the people that drive down here are... not good at driving in icy weather. That includes the local truckers.

Byron is also right. If there is no slushy, icy stuff, MontEagle is not a big deal. I went up and down it in 3rd gear this summer no problem.

Keep an eye on the weather but it's not your driving that will be an issue. As is so often the case it would be the people around you that are likely to cause trouble.

The rain storm left us 4", as it passed through on it's way North. Nothing like a leak test. Dang nabit, failed again.

OK Byron, you are right. We Southerners don't know anything about driving on ice. No argument. And we don't have the equipment to deal with it either. And you are right, it's not really a mountain....just a big ass hill. Nolo contendere. Although perhaps we should petition someone to change the name to 'EagleHill' or something more appropriate.

That said, it won't matter a damn if one of those 1 in 30 truckers who is probably from Alabama or Georgia spins out and blocks both lanes if you're stuck halfway up or down the mountain for hours. It has happened before many, many times.

Fortunately for Larry, the weather guessers got it wrong and there was no ice or snow anywhere near there. All I was attempting to do was make sure Larry was aware there was a potential issue and that there was an alternative route.

So Sunday night/Monday morning we got 8-10 inches of SNOW. Temperature was 5-10 Degrees F
Supposed to be more snow on the weekend.
When it gets below 10 degree F the mechanics come out from the shop at 5:00 AM and
start the buses as some of them are reluctant to start.'
This weekend is the "Sportsmen Show" in Toronto. I'm going Saturday to browse.

The weather people get excited when they see the words "potential for
snow."

I admit, a truck accident there can keep things tied up for a while.
Same anywhere on I-24 or, for that matter, getting around or through
Atlanta. Personally, I've been tied up more in traffic between Monteagle
and Nickajack Lake, especially around Jasper, than anywhere else on I-24
or I-75 south of Chattanooga. One time it took almost three hours on a
wonderful night in July when it was the wrong temperature on that curve
by South Pittsburg.

So, we're here...in Jacksonville. Slept in late this morning, didn't get out of the campground until after 9:00am. When we got up this morning, it was sunny and cool...not a drop of rain or a flake of snow. Arrive Jacksonville 8;30PM. Up Monteagle in 3rd gear towing our Honda Civic. Only fly in the ointment is...I got Gremlins in the EFI engine management system....but that's another topic for discussion. Nice to be in the warm weather with grand kids. Gonna help them build their pine box derby car tomorrow....life is good!!
