No quite GMC related, but your local Radio Shack may be holding closing sale.
You can pick your EL wire and 12v power supply for replacement dash lights with a good discount. Lots of other useful things. Entire store here is 25% off, with other discounts on some items.
Sad to see them go, but this is the ever Changing retail business.

Radio Shack signed their own death warrant when they stopped having knowledgeable employees and instead hired people who's only job was to assault you with cell phone offers the second you walked through the doors. Last time I was there (years ago) the guy behind the counter had no idea what an amplifier patch cord was, or what a 1/4" phone plug or RCA jack was. But he was sure I was paying too much for my cell phone program.

Radio Shack in my experience was a real "stickler" when it came to refunds or exchanges. No receipt or 1 DAY over the limit, too bad, so sad, hit the street!

I for one, am not rejoicing although this company was probably a victim of the times. The link I provided it the 1958 Allied Radio catalog. I order a Space Spanner, page 222, for $15.95 and by Dad wired it up over night on a Christmas in 1958. I got my ham radio license in 1958, KN0TME. My transmitter was a Heathkit DX20.

I think the kids today are just interested in the stuff that kept the "American boy" dreaming in the 50's. That Space Spanner, and a pair of cheap headphones, took me all over the world.

After this it was "Allied Radio Shack" and then just Radio Shack.

Oh, RADIOSHACK, GRRrrrr

Radio Shack was once pretty good, they were "the parts place". But they had some dirty laundry that I didn't think would enhance business.

The items they sold had to show a percentage profit or they stopped carrying them. This was the reason you saw lot of turn over and more cheap junk coming into the store.

They have an incredibly bad way of treating store manages. Again it is the profit incentive. Under the store managers guidance, the store HAD to show a profit. Obviously, this can't be maintained continuously, things change and with corporate changing out the stock all the time, the customers get nervous.
You may have been hired a couple months ago, had a bad month then one day here comes the district manager with a couple of managers from another store. The Store manager is dismissed and the store is inventoried and handed over to the next victim, I mean store manager. They were not forgiving.

over the years, even parts began to go bad, I can't tell you how they figured that one out but they started to have less and less.

THEN COME THE CELL PHONES. Where you used to have a sales person available to help you find what you want, they are all tied up trying to sell cell phones. So you struggle, look all over and finally find what you need, go to the counter, and the cell phone customer has the priority, "we'll be with you in a minute"..... Oh, REALLY!

Now called "RADIO CELL PHONE SHACK", I haven't been back for quite awhile because of how they have changed.

I agree, it was self destructed and this started a long time ago and has just spiraled to what it is today.

There was a blurb in finance where they said RADIO SHACK was in dire straits and had to do something to survive. Even at that time they didn't think they had a good shot at survival.

That Attempt to corner the market with the ALLIED-RADIO SHACK was short lived. they actually had the signs changed but were forced to take them back down for fear of a monopoly attempt. Lucky for whoever bought Allied because they seem to be doing well.

I used to help a friend that was a store manager for a while so I used to see and hear things about the company... Not to say that in todays market, with the internet stores popping up, it's getting tougher to stay in the black. but if you are shoddy, you will have trouble making it.

Just my thoughts

I also remember the old Allied Radio days, and building my first Knight Kit stereo amplifier was very satisfying. When I first turned it on and it worked, I beamed with pride and was as happy as I can remember over my accomplishment.

Certainly agreed that they lost their way with cheap toys and cell phones, but I think there are not many hobbyists left to support the old Radio Shack. Walking in and having to explain parts to the employees certainly didn't help either.

Now, if I can only find where I put my Erector Set...........

Most all their type items are available on line from Amazon eBay or real places like Digikey. But they were nice to have when you needed it right now. Radio Shlock is a far cry from Allied (Still have some printed catalogues) but will be missed. At least they stopped asking for name and address every time. That was a pain. .

Not all stores are closing or having the sales. Only the shitty ones. RS wanted to close 1,100 stores last year, but their creditors would not allow it. Now, with more stores than Walmart and Best Buy combined, and threats of being delisted, it is happening. I Hope they can restructure and survive, because even though I can get my stuff online in a few days, Sometimes it's nice to be able to hit the shack for something you need in a hurry. Fry's electronics is too much hassle.

It was also due to inferior product at inflated prices. I bought some
red 12V LEDs from RS and they were more than a dollar each. Looked
on-line and found a pack of 25 for around $10. When I tested the on-line
ones against the RS ones, the on-line ones were about 3x as bright. I
think it's just sign of the times - better stuff on-line. Amazon
probably had more to do with killing them off than anything else. I will
be sad to see such an old institution go...

Walmart outnumbers Radio Shack but it is close (4399 to "4000+ ...Best
Buy has 1052). I didn't realize how many Radio Shacks were still open.
That was a surprise...!

And no "Fry's" anywhere close to Oklahoma City! I don't know where they are other than one store near Plano, TX.

Betting on cellphone sales has turned out to be a disaster! I have no idea as to what sort of focus R.S. needs to make to succeed, but it's clear that the current path is not it.

They lost their way, and strayed from the basics - their founder knew this -

Tandy's Money Machine: How Charles Tandy Built Radio Shack into the World's Largest Electronics Chain: Irvin Farman: 9780916371128: Amazon.com: Books

It was an interesting read.

FWIW, I paid for two years of college with the rise in their stock in the late 70’s with their TRS-80 and CoCo computers….. which was followed by thirty years of lackluster performance.

They lacked the fortitude to stay with their own brands.

I worked there for 17 or so years from 1980 to 1997 was a part time sales rep, manager trainee, then store manager, corporate trainer and the district sales manager. Paid for allot of my college edumacation Smile it was a great organization based on entrepreneurship, knowledgeable staff, and customer service. The CEO in the 90s transitioned from high profit connectors, private labeled electronics and after the sale support to "down-stream" revenue models ... Satellites, cellular, and any other contract based revenue stream, such as ADT alarms, and Sprint home phone service. That provided short-term revenue and profits at the expense of r&d, manufacturing, product line differentiators, and ultimately the demise of the entrepreneurs...let alone repeat business. The proliferation of Internet sales and the rise of Amazon and Parts Warehouse style businesses made the competitive landscape tough...then when wireless carriers figured out that they could cut out the middle man and sell directly to customers radioshack was dead before it or its investors knew it. Sad I loved the company and the People but glad I moved on....

I had forgotten that waste of time but now remember going in there to buy a RS 232 male connector to repair a printer cable at work. It was 2-3 bucks. A couple kids that worked there were jiving in the corner and I waited a while before I finally asked if one of them could interrupt their discussion long enough to check me out. One of them came over and I handed him the connector and a 5 dollar bill. He started by asking me my name and I waved the bill and said "Abraham Lincoln". He said sorry but he had to get the name and address. I picked my 5 bucks up and left the connector on the counter and the kid to go back to his conversation.

They filed bankruptcy today. So of course, I tried to order the components for Emerys knock sensor light via their web site.

I've seen a worse web site but it's been a while. Now wonder they're going bankrupt. When I enter the part #, it shows the correct part but then when I click add to cart, it displays a non-html page and won't add it. Tried several times with different part numbers.

Finally tried the chat and was advised to call the 800 number and place the order.

Does anywhere else accept or cross to RS part numbers?

Kerry,

Don't worry about it. I'll check tomorrow and probably have all of those
parts in my still-big electronics parts pile. May even have one of the
knock sensors already built. If anything's missing, those are all
extremely common parts which should be available from any electronics
supplier, such as Jameco, BGMicro, Fry's, etc.
