As I reported earlier, on the drive back to southern Oregon the Hayden 2797 fan clutch came on at odd times and I experienced belt squeaks when I shouldn't have. It felt to me like the heavy duty Hayden is mis-matched for the higher air flow of the plastic fan, and it made sense to me to change the belts over to a two belts driving the 100 amp alternator system. Today I made those changes and learned a couple of things that might be helpful for others.

First, the larger ring diameter on the plastic fan makes it difficult to get at the four nuts that hold the fan and fan clutch to the water pump.

As I explored this further I found that with the Curtis split fan shroud it was possible to remove the fan and clutch from the top without the need to remove the lower fan shroud once you can get the four nuts off. I also found that if you slacken all the belts as much as they can be, you can rotate the water pump to bring each nut to the top where it is easy to remove. By taking the fan and clutch as a unit out from the top, changing the belts over to a two belt alternator drive is easy. Once the belts were loosely in place, then I rotated the water pump to bring each nut to the top and locked them down with a lock washer. With all the belts still loosely in place I moved the power steering pump as far to the drivers side as possible and locked it down to get the maximum pulley wrap on the two alternator drive belts. Once all the belts were in place, I used a pry bar in front of the alternator bracket resting on the head of the bolt in that position with the end of the
pry bar down low on the alternator. From there it was easy to lever the alternator away from the water pump pulley to fully tighten both belts while securing the adjustment bolts to hold them in place. The same lever between the bracket and the AC compressor made an easy task of tightening that belt as well.

All in all, the whole procedure of changing out the fan clutch to the AC Delco unit and changing the drive to a double belt around the alternator, power steering pump and crank pulley took less than 30 minutes and it was all done from the top without separating the fan shroud. Much easier than I expected.
