Jim I did everything you mention at least twice. The boosters came from Jim Bounds. When I drive it home from kens in Pa to Jersey ( about 100 miles ) I will see if I can break in the shoes even if I have to ride the brakes with my left foot. I will feel more comfortable that I have brakes and at current temps I doubt I can overheat them. Looking for local brake place that still does their own relining. Thanks everybody for your help.

Hey Jon, I'm in NJ too, not far from you, in fact I grew up a few towns from where you are now. I live in Sussex County, and am also an energy guy...CEM for Constellation Energy. I tried to pm you but you have it blocked on your profile. I was just in Mahwah last fall helping another new owner with a Cad500 in his coach, but I trust Ken's work. Call or txt any time if you need anything. 201.983. Eight 2 eight 0. I too have just completely resto-modded my CanyonLands.

G'day,
OOPS!
I just sent the email below as an HTML and it is now in a queue waiting moderator approval so I changed it to a Plain Text message
and am resending it.
Sorry,
Rob M.
Jon,
I reckon your "handle" (ACES) is very clever, however, it would help us help you if you added a signature like most of us have. If
you hang around here long enough we'll get to know you, where you're at and what model of GMC you have.
The email directly below recognized my motivation to call Ken. Your original email and asking people here for help could be
interpreted as you did not have confidence in his ability to fix your brake problem. The email below clarifies that.
For those of you that have never met Ken and don't know his background rest assured HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING! Ken cut his teeth in
an Oldsmobile dealership and worked on Toronados when they were new. He has been working on GMC's since they were introduced. His
knowledge of the GMC is remarkable.
When I bought Double Trouble he picked it up for me in Delaware and took it back to his shop. I told him to fix anything that would
kill us or leave us stranded by the side of the road. He didn't know how to handle that request; he wanted to know if I wanted to
know what he was going to do before he did it. I told him that his reputation for good workmanship and honesty preceded him and just
go for it! I asked him if he wanted my credit card number but he noted he wasnt worried about payment. I gave it to him anyway.
Suffice it to say our first trip in the GMC from his shop to the Harrington GMCMI Convention up to Maine over to Niagara Falls and
then down to Texas went just fine. The master cylinder failed but that was not something he could have predicted.
When we spoke Ken noted that "there was a bunch of things wrong with it."
1) Booster was replaced - It would not hold vacuum after the engine shut off
2) P-30 M/C was replaced with an OEM M/C
a) larger piston in P-30 reduces the pressure in the lines and it was not needed on your coach for the 80mm front calipers
b) M/C lines reversed:
i. P-30 M/C: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/disc-brakes-2fchuck-aulgur-reaction-arm-install/p40258-master-cylinder.html
1. rear chamber feeds the REAR brakes and doesnt have a residual valve
ii. OEM M/C: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/mechanical/p54564-new-polyarmor-to-the-master-cylinder.html
1. front chamber feeds the REAR brakes and has a residual valve
3) The M/C bracket was on the wrong side of the M/C corrected when the OEM M/C was installed
4) One adjuster was replaced - had a tooth broken off it
5) One adjuster spring was replaced it was broken
6) The drums had been turned and the shoes didnt match the drums
I believe that your brakes will be just fine and get better as the shoes bed in on your way home. Keep us posted.
Regards,
Rob M.

PS I just thought of something amusing; when I picked up Double Trouble Ken ran my Master Card and it got refused! Ken had done a
bunch of work on Double Trouble and the bill was sizeable, however, no where near my credit limit as I pay it off monthly. I
suggested he call M/C and see what the problem was. The Master Card agent asked him; how do you know Robert Mueller is who he says
he is? Ken responded; hes standing right in front of me. She then asked to speak to me and asked me some questions regarding
recent charges on the card which satisfied her. I handed the phone back to Ken and she told him to run the charge again. He did and
it bombed AGAIN! Im watching Kens body language and I can tell hes now getting worried! She told him to run it a third time and
it went through. Smiles all around! We reckoned it was because my MC carries an Australia address.

Subject: [GMCnet] Gmc brake problem
For the record I would like to state that all the shops and individuals who dealt with this problem provided great service. Ken has
gone way out of his way as well as Jim Bounds. The depth and quality of their work is not in question. This is the kind of problem
that is not easily resolved no matter how much time and money is thrown at it. No one can make money fixing it or selling parts.
This problem appears to have existed for many years as demonstrated by all the modifications previously made to the brake system.
The brakes locked up in the back only once , never to be duplicated again. At that time the wheels were showing 150 deg F on the TPS
system. Bakes were readjusted soon after and found broken spring. Fronts never could be locked up. Shoes had 1300 miles when they
were removed. They show very little or no wear. What wear there is appears to be at the center but it's hard to tell. The brakes
never pulled. They never seemed to grab just slowed coach down. Maybe it is too much coach for brakes! From Kens explanation of how
it brakes now seems that it's performance is better but he is not happy with it. At this point he is probably working for about $10
per hour because he doesn't feel he can charge me for all the time he has spent troubleshooting. I have 45 years of experience
troubleshooting complex mechanical system problems and I understand the effort put in to resolve them. Sometimes you just bypass
them because the answer stays elusive. I am very grateful for everyone's efforts on my behalf to solve the problem. When I get the
coach back I will see how it is and go forward from there. Thinking about spraying foot powder on shoes to test contact point on
drum. I really don't want to undo anything that Ken did. It went out there on a flatbed and I am driving it home!

I have to add my personal recommendation for Ken Frey as well. I am not a mechanic but have been turning wrenches on my own cars and projects and for others since I was 14. I think it is a great hobby and I do nearly all of the work on my own cars. I have made an exception on the GMC and have used Ken for some of the specialty work like the front bearings, front end, and 6 wheel alignment. I have also been fortunate to travel with him along with the GMC Colonial Travelers. He is not only an excellent mechanic, GMC expert, but also an all around great guy. His wife is terrific too!
Although Ken is not active or present on the forum his historic and continuing contribution to the GMC community is amazing. It is great to be able to talk to him and pick his brain on any aspect of the GMC. If you are in the North East and need service he is the place to go. Check out the GMC Colonial Travelers new web page and join us for a rally. Between Ken Frey and historian Bill Bryant you will be in the presence of GMC Royalty.
