When checking the play in the steering system reference is made to check the intermeadiate shaft spline (blue coated) for "excessive" play.

What constitues "excessive" play?

The maintenace manuals are no help as they, all but one" make no reference to the intermediate shaft at all.

Steve,

I have a brand new one here in Sydney and there is NO play between the blue splined shaft and the yoke.

When Peter and I rebuilt his there was a small amount of play in the CV joint, blue splined shaft / yoke, and universal joint.

I checked it after we'd installed it and I'd GUESS that it was been 1 - 3 degrees or so.

When we put it all together the coach didn't wander.

The good news is I was talking to Alex yesterday and he has come up with a way to re-coat the blue slip shaft which he will share
with me to add to the procedure I put together.

The blue coating is in good shape. Just a very slight wear mark. Movement is about 1 degree.

Steve,

Nuthin' wrong with that!

BTW while you've got the Flange (7) off you might want to drill and tap a hole for a grease nipple, that way you can grease the CV
joint, blue splined shaft, and U-joint easily with Valvoline SynPower or Caterpillar Desert Gold, or some other Moly grease.

Rob M.
