The new S&J engine in the Clasco went through the initial run in and the 500 mile break in process with flying colors, high and stable oil pressure hot and cold, well controlled water temp and easy stating hot or cold. We changed out the break in oil and filter and will get a Blackstone report shortly. The drive back to hilly southern Oregon also went well with only a loose alternator belt squealing an issue to be dealt with now that we are home. To get from northern to southern Oregon requires climbing five low passes with mean rises in the 1000 to 2000 foot range. Not too hight, but long and steep in places so the heavily loaded trucks have to go onto the shoulder and run at 15 to 20 mph while the lighter trucks can get up to 30 to 35 mph. Cars aren't much effected but it can be a zoo with all the different speeds, especially when one truck tries to pass another and everyone looses momentum!

The 100 amp alternator and plastic fan may require more driving force than can be achieve with a single belt. JimH had the rebuilder install a double belt pulley on the alternator so I will chase down two matched belts and change them over. I also question whether the extreme duty Hayden 2797 is the right fan clutch for the plastic fan. On the way home yesterday in cold foggy weather there seemed to be too much cooling going on and the fan clutch engaged a number of times when it seemingly had no business doing so. On one down hill run I saw 145 degrees water temp. Most of the time it stayed right at the 180 degree thermostat temp and the hottest I saw was about 190. I have a new ACDelco fan clutch that I will install at the same time as I change the belts. With now only 750 miles on the clock there is still much break in to be done, but all signs at this point are positive. If it proves to be as strong as the S&J engine in the Royale I will be one happy camper.
