The Po installed a new steeringbox and stabelizer bar and all seems nice and tight. Still found Olga a handful at motorwayspeed
As I have nothing alse to do here in sunny portugal i decided to have alook at it
At the steering weel ther is 1 " of play and going down there is no doubt there is significant play in the steeringbox I can move the shaft by hand
Is there any way to adjust the box? Without taking it out etc ?

This is the wrong way to do it but it can be roughed in on coach. You can't really set the input torque but you can set the on center preload if it's that bad and make it drivable. Not condoned. Engine on and box on center rock the steering shaft 11-1 o'clock and watch for Pitman arm delay of response to movement. Un jam the jam nut and tighten the Allen 1/8 turn at a time till the delayed movement is gone. Back it off till you are at just at the no delay point and tighten the jam nut. It is very easy to over tighten allen and ruin the box. Pull the box when you get home and do it by the book. Again I never told you this.

No John, I do not agree with you.

Do you want to get rid of the slack you should tighten the steering box at the input shaft, loosen the large lock plate and use a plyer with 90 degree end or what ever in the two small holes to turn the bolt clockwise.

As John did so will you see the slack go away.

And yes I did never tell you this either.

Hmmm. Maybe I better leave it alone for the time beeing
It is not realy bad, but wandering when I overtake trucks at highway speed. I lived with it so far. Guess I can live with it a bit more

G'day,

I have read the responses above and I'm going to ask one question.

The section on the Steering Gear Box 18 pages long with specific steps that detail measurements, torques; and settings to adjust it properly; do you really think it's a good idea to do anything to it that doesn't follow those instructions to the letter?

The answer is pretty simple Rob No.

However, John's approach is what I used to do until I did find out that it is no good, if you have a worn out steering box and a PO has been adjusting it earlier and then you adjust it some more you could experience that the balls lock up, not good at all.
It is actually where you adjust the "over the center" preload.

Then if you take a look at X7525 9-37 you will see how you do the adjustments, we are after the thrust bearing adjustment and this is the right way to remove the slack.
But note that it is not recommended to do this in the vehicle ( But you can and it works, I know Wink

It appears we both agree that one shouldn't be messing with the steering box without following the MM.

I appreciate you pointing me at 9-37; after reading the STEERING GEAR ADJUSTMENTS I realized that both the THRUST BEARING ADJUSTMENT
and the PITMAN SHAFT "OVER CENTER" SECTOR ADJUSTMENT should be performed in the sequence in the manual.

Now to pat us on the back - you or I could probably adjust it in the vehicle because we're fairly mechanically inclined, however,
one must keep the mechanically declined / challenged in mind and that's what the MM does! ;-)

When I attended the Coos Bay Rally I gave a presentation based on the Steering Inspection Guide; when I got to the steering box I
SPECIFICALLY noted NOT to adjust in the vehicle and why NOT to adjust it in the vehicle. Five minutes later someone came up to me
and informed me that one of the guys went out to the parking lot and adjusted his. WTH?

This appears to be an old problem. I replaced my old steering box and
my coach does not wander and I no longer have to keep playing with the
steering wheel. I think Jim Bounds said it best, they coaches old like
we are and after a point they just need to be replaced. They are not
that expensive and it make a big difference.
I hope this makes sense because this is an old issue and an old problem,
bite the bullet and put in a new box

Righr. Mine was the only stopgap that can be done on coach and is normally the last step. It needs to be on the bench to get the fluid out and follow the stèps with the spanner loading followed by the overcenter.

I read that and that's why I sent you the step by procedure.

I ga-ron-tee that if that procedure is followed you'll find out whatever is causing the problem.

BTW Helen and I will be heading for Europe the middle of July to do a bit of touring before we join with a group of GMCer's from the
west coast on a Rhine River Cruise from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, The Netherlands maybe we can meet you somewhere in Europe.

Unfortunately I don't think we'll get as far north as Norway, Espen.

Hi Lenze

Jim Hupy and I along with our mistresses are on the same River Cruise as
Rob and several more GMC owners. After Amsterdam we going to Romania for a
week then to Copenhagen to
board a Holland America Cruise with first stop in Bergen, Norway - there on
Wednesday Sept 9th from 8am to 6pm.
Possibly????? meet.
