We've been looking for a Tracker for some time and I'm going to look at what looks like a nice 2002 4dr auto with 4wd this afternoon.

My question concerns the mileage. It has 188K miles and I don't know how long lived these motors are. I'm not sure if it's the 4 or 6. The CL ad is not clear the owner is not available until I see the car.

Any thoughts or comments?

I can't speak to the 188,000 miles, that seems like a lot, but our '03 has over 125,000 miles on it and has no problems. It does not use or leak any oil. The only issue (really a non-issue) is a little tappet noise, sometimes, on cold start-up. It goes away within 30 seconds or so. If and when it does start giving me trouble, I will have to decide whether to rebuild it or not. It is such an ideal towed for our use, what with four wheel drive for exploring, and the light weight (~2900 #).

Has it been used as a towd? If so I believe the mileage will include all towed miles -- so engine miles would be overstated.

Our '03 has over 120k trouble free miles on it. The odometer does not
record when being towed but it several thousand more miles being towed 4
wheels down with it only thrown into neutral.

I luv my little marshmallow (as the kids call it) :-)

Moot point. I passed on the Tracker, it needed a timing chain and was not 4wd as the ad had stated. Check engine was on...buy here/pay here dealer sticker on the back...just a bad vibe.

We'll keep looking. I'd prefer the earlier model with the non interference engine.

I've been quite happy with my Mouse - 2012 Kia Soul. Manual trans can be towed 4 down. Demco tow plate and bar and we're fat city. I use it as a daily driver as well. According to the display, ~~ 34MPG. Checking at gas stops bears this out. Direct injection, variable cam timing, etc. Steams along nicely.
