Hey,

my GMC received a couple of replacement items. Unfortunately the shop
can't/doesn't want to do an alignment.

Anyone has a suggestion on how to proceed? Maybe someone knows someone
in the Farmville, VA area that they can recommend?

Thanks.

Peer,

I Googled "Truck Alignment, Farmville, VA" and got five hits. I would call them and see what they say.

I would suggest you provide the shop that does the alignment with a copy of Section 3A Front Suspension out of Maintenance Manual
X-7625. That way they will have the information they need to do it properly. I have sent you an OFF NET message with that section
attached as a pdf file.

You need to make them aware that it is most important to check and set the ride height first and then do the alignment. They need to
know they need to drive the GMC after they make any changes to the ride height and then check to see if the settings are correct.

Also recent experience has shown that the alignment specs in MM X-7625 should be revised to read:

Caster: 5° maximum (or as much as you can get with 0° camber)

Camber: 0° (or a bit of negative camber [0.5° max] because radial tires like to run flat on the road)

Toe In / Out: 0" (or a bit of toe out [1/16" or less] because a front wheel drive vehicle will toe in to take up play in the
steering when power is applied)

It is MOST important that the upper control arm cam nuts are tightened to 80 - 95 ft lb when finished; KenH can comment on that!

Hello Rob,

thanks for the list. I guess, I could have done the same googling.
Didn't occur to me. I forwarded the list to my buddy to take a look at it.

Funnily, one of the addresses did take care of the repair but said that
they couldn't do the alignment... East End Motors, in case anyone has
the same question in the future.

If they don't start out by checking the tire pressure & ride height before
starting the alignment,
I would look for a shop that does that first.
Just my take.

Peer,

You're welcome, however, it is most important that you forward the MM section to your buddy and have him find a shop to do the
alignment that is willing to work to the MM and the additional information. If they don't you may not be happy with the way the
coach handles when you get it back!

I took my GMC to a truck alignment facility after I set the ride height and I explained how I wanted it aligned and why. The guy I
worked was most accommodating. He was shocked when I asked him to tighten the adjustment cam nuts to 90 ft lb and asked "you sure?"
I said if the bolts break it's MY fault! He did it and they were fine.
