I had a couple of notes asking where exactly Dan is buried. They were interested specifically in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Dan use to use APRS (ham radio Automatic Position Reporting System) tracking frequently when traveling. So I thought it was appropriate to put his call sign and location on the APRS map. It took me a while to get around the problem of not knowing his APRS-IS password. I also could not find and appropriate and respectful icon to put on the APRS map. There were lots of options for every thing from police to canoes to RV's and airplanes etc., but they all mean something in real time to other amateurs. So I just chose a generic solid color one for "shelter".

If the APRS will allow you to import an icon I have a GMC icon I can send you; I reckon Dan would like that.

Unfortunately it does not. There are about 126 predefined ones and they are sent as a single hexidecimal character rather than as a graphic. If it was a graphic image we might have been able to do something.

OK Rob,
I changed it to a cross which really is an icon for a church.
I also could add his name to the description though most hams would use and go by call sign.
Look at it again and give me your opinion.

Yes, but you did not tell me which was better. The cross or the sun. I'm leaning towards the cross except that I wish it was not black.

The cross it is. I liked it better except I wish that it was not black.
I'm going to try to add a text link also. I'm still working on it. I just hope the ham community does not come down on me. I doubt anyone will say anything. It is interesting that there was little to no APRS activity in that area, except for Dan, so I doubt that anyone will say anything about me posting a link.

I'm sorry it took so long. I had the idea while I was there a week ago but it took me a week to figure out how to do it and not violate FCC rules.
Technically Dan is now an SK (Silent Key) so nothing can be transmitted over the air under his call sign any more. I also did not know his APRS registration number and password. So even if I ignored the SK problem I still could not do it.
Two days ago I came up with the idea of making an object (the Veterans Cemetery) and naming the object with Dan's call sign. Now I could post and update that object under my call sign (that's legal). Since the object information is sent in over the Internet from my APRS Internet Gateway it falls outside of FCC jurisdiction. When someone looks up a call sign, the objects name tables are also scanned and a match is found. The end user does not know the difference of where the match was found unless he looks closely at the record. Who really cares where the match was found as long as it worked.
The reference in the displayed object information block to an Internet site is done all the time by radio clubs, etc. The rules say it may not be used for anything commercial IF IT IS TRANSMITTED OVER THE AIR. While the site is commercial, I do not see any commercial use by displaying his slide show. Also as long as the actual slide show is not transmitted over the air, I think I'm OK that way. No one is going to try to do that over the air because it would take way more bandwidth than is available on RF. Also while we do move message and email traffic over APRS, I do not think anyone has ever set up a web browser gateway (port80) for APRS. The illegality is not in the capability but rather than in the commercial use. As an example, We have had amateur radio to phone service for years. Long before people thought about cell phones, I used it from overseas in the 1960's to call home while I was in the military. I also used it locally around here in the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's. As long as the traffic did not discuss commercial things we were OK. I believe the same rules apply here.
So all that if left now is to move this off of my laptop and install it permanently on my I-gate. I'll set it up to update once every 30 minutes so anyone traveling through the area will get an update over RF on their APRS equipped radios. Internet sites that are receiving all the time and are not distance sensitive, do not need the frequent updates but will get them anyway.
That was a lot of stuff to go through just to put an icon and a text block on a screen but it was worth the effort for Dan. The actual process was simple. Doing it in a way to keep the feds happy was the pain.

I had to get it "legal". There always is some "outsider" who considers himself the "radio cop". He calls in a complaint and then the Feds send you a letter to cease operations until prove you are not in violation or you "fix" the problem. It is one of these you are guilty until you prove you are innocent.
I got one once when I was 22 or 23 years old. Some anonymous neighbor complained that I was messing up their TV reception on channel 2. The neighbor saw the antennas on my parents house and so it had to be me. My parents forwarded the letter to me in South Korea. I wrote back to the FCC something like that I was not the cause of their problem but I had talked to my CO and he was willing to give me the time off to help another Federal agency diagnose their problem. All he required was for the FCC to pay my round trip transportation expenses. I also asked how long they thought my services might be needed. I never heard from them again. My CO and I had a good laugh over that.
Anyway, Dan's project is done and it should stay there a long time (I hope).
It has only been a couple of weeks but I really miss finding his emails in my in box almost every day.
