I recently joined the Facebook GMC Motorhome group, and there seem to be a lot of posts. Seems there are many novice owners on Facebook, so it seems the interest in these coaches is continuing.
Trying to get them to sign up on the Forum so they can find the answers to a lot of their questions .

Every time one of us suggests coming here for answers, at least one of them whines about it. When a question is asked about something already done here, many of us just say go look on the forum for the answer.
You can lead a horse....
I thought it was pretty funny when someone asked if anyone ever did an engine swap with a more modern engine and one guy said "no".
I think a lot of them are not GMC noobs, but talking about them online is new to them.

There is even one there that was here. For a while, I got "shouted down" when I suggested GMCMI and the Forum, but since then others have both come to my defense and stepped on this person enough so he got more civil.
The only reason I write there at all is to spread the word to the younger people that show up there that the group can provide a lot better support that FB can ever provide.

And if we all think hard enough, we can figure out the name of the guy
with the attitude against GMCMI and the Forum. He tries to correct all
the wrong as he sees it though he never sees that his own attitude isn't
exactly right.
It takes all kinds but some you'd rather do without.

The thing that is lost on all of them, that if there are good discussion and good ideas, how the hell are they ever gonna be able to look that shit up years later?

Excellent opinion, as always.
Here's the real deal. Those under 50 were taught by those of us over 65
that they don't have to pay dues or be self-reliant. Add to that the
immediate gratification one can get using the Internet and you have the
reason some people will join a Facebook group and not participate in a
forum.
Heck, I have difficulty searching some forums even when I am using the
correct terms and know what I'm looking for. One another forum of which
I'm a member a guy thinks he's helpful when he points people to his
extensive laundry list of garbled information. Yes, its a list he put
together for himself so, therefore, he understands the arrangement but
to others it is confusing.
While it may be wise to get on the GMCNet, those under 50 are not
joiners. There's a bunch of new GMCers coming of age but they'll
approach things differently not because they are stupid but because they
are from a different generation that has been raised with different
expectations and ways of getting answers.
Try as some might to redirect them, I doubt that real success will come.
My opinion, which, in today's economy is worth less than two cents (not
accounting for the price of gas and oil vs the rest of the economy).

I`m still under 50, but not too many years 
I dont have facebook profile and not planned to open one. Believe that two other Finnish coach owners could be found on that group there, one send me link to join there.
I have found an answer from this forum for every problem we have had during last year with our PB and also for those problems that I didn`t even know we are going to have...
It was takin some time to get used to this forum base without separate engine/body/etc. sections, if comparing to FSJnetwork and impalassforum which I also read regularly.
Here was also first confusing little when I saw same headline twice or three times at same page(reflect of mailing list ??), but I have been used to it.
To be honest, search in many forums, often brings out so much information that it´s hard to find what was lookin for originally.
For me like many other newbies (at least I believe so), this site is priceless to find correct information about GMC from real enthusiast group who´s been there and done that actually not virtually (I think they also have proper hat and t-shirt),
so BIG Thank You for these people that bother to answer when same questions pops up again and again.
I´m not active writer in any forum, even in Finnish language ones, so I just continue to lurkin here quiet.

Just out of curiosity, Rob, when was the last time you got an instant
answer from google? Almost instant response, yes, but the answer
requires wandering through a zillion URLs, each of which return almost
the same list of responses, until you finally find one which leads to
your solution. Care to share your magic formula for getting exactly the
right words, and only the right words, in the search request?

I think many of the Facebook generation think that this forum is old and outdated, as are the people on it. To some extent that is true. Many searches here turn up information that is no longer valid, part numbers that are no longer available, references that no longer exist, links that are broken, and so on. I think they also feel that asking for advice or help here is equivalent to asking their parents for help, they're going to be told what to do rather than get thoughtful discussion.
That is not to say this place isn't great, because it is. But there may be too much information on it, not all of good, and they may not have the time, inclination, or ability to sort through it to find what they need. The advantage of the Facebook site is that you can ask a question and get an answer quickly, perhaps not the best answer but one that will work, and that is what they are looking for.
You have to realize that most of us were around when these coaches were new, while many of the Facebook generation have never seen a carburetor let alone worked on their own vehicle. The GMC to them is something from another age, a strange and wondrous relic. As they say, something old is just something that was once new, and survived.

I’ve been on Facebook since it was a .edu only “playground”
It’s social media.
Understand it as such. It’s intended for fun and games.
Different tools for different purposes.
All that being said, my 80 year old mother uses it, and I taught a number of 90+ year old WWII vets in the same retirement village to use it on their iPads, and they now regularly terrorize their grandchildren and great grandchildren with it (and I regularly am texted pictures of that drive that just misses being a hole in one).
Those who are technically proficient will eventually gravitate here.

Probably the biggest problem is the omnipresence of smartphones, data plans, and the FB app which makes it the easiest resource for them, by far. About half of our group uses the email listserv which they simply are not going to use --even I consider that as my last option (I'm signed up for both). OTOH, accessing the forum directly is cumbersome and clunky from a phone.

Ron,
Instant response depends on your frame of reference. I'm 67 and went to school before the Internet and Google. To find out the
answer to a question one would have to go to books for answers.
I reckon compared to looking through a book Google provides INSTANT answers. They may not be EXACTLY what I wanted but I rarely go
beyond the first page of URL's to find out what I want to know.
