There is some type of capacitor or condenser connected to one side of the Onan coil. I could not find a great picture of one, but on the photo site, some seem to have it but some don't. What does it do? Are they necessary to run? Looks like the condenser used with points but at least double the size. Just a single wire connected to one side of the coil.

I am a bookkeeper, not an electrition.

Steve,

Like you electrically challenged so I can't answer your question, however, thanks for the laugh!

It's electrician! ;-)

Rob,
I wish I could blame my spelling on spell checkers and Apple auto correct but I have to take responsibility. Spelling is not my strong suit. Like I said, I am a bookkeeper, pretty good with numbers, but can barely spell my own name.

Condenser is used with a points style ignition to keep the points from burning up. It also helps somewhat with RFI problems.
Perhaps the condenser is there, along side the coil, instead of in the little points box because it was a replacement that does not fit in the box.
Change to Pertronix and do away with points.

Nope, the capacitor that is mounted to the coil is for noise reduction. The
one for the ignition points is located inside the points box. If the one on
the coil is removed, the Onan should still run fine. You might hear some
snapping or popping in your radio speakers, or according to some RF
junkies, someone might experience airborne interference to sensitive
attenuated equipment in the near vicinity.

If the capacitor is wired on the +side of the ignition coil it is there ignition noise suppression in your or you neighbor radios. When the capacitor is wired on the - (minus) side (points side) of the coil it is there for arc suppression to keep from burning up the points.

The first one is not required to make the engine run correctly but your neighbors might like you if the listen to their radio.

The second one is definitely required. It is usually wired and mounted at the points end of the wire rather than at the coil. I do not remember where it is mounted on the Onan because I use Pertronix unit rather than points.

Thanks to all (Rob, Ken H, Tom, Jim, & Ken B),

The genset in my coach is running well. I am working on a donor Onan, which is hanging from an engine hoist, trying to get spark and get it started. Your answers were very helpful. Now I know that I don't have to worry about that part in terms of getting it running. My plan is to work through the testing and troubleshooting guide in the repair manual and other resources.

I might even break out the Dwayne Simmons DVD this weekend.

Thanks again.

Rob,
No offense taken at all. I got a good laugh out of it. It's kind of a friends and family joke, and i consider you my good GMC friend from Australia. I shared it with my wife and we were both laughing about it. Great to have friends around the country and around the world.

Many thanks for all of your quick and valuable responses to so many on the gmc.net.

On a side note (non-GMC) I wish I could be in Sydney on Monday. My good friends from the legendary rock band Cheap Trick will be playing at the Qantas Credit Union Arena in Sydney. Apparently the Sydney Opera House was not available. I always thought the Opera House was so cool.

Steve,

Glad to hear you got a laugh out of it too! I poke fun at myself frequently, however, I have discovered one must be careful as there
are some thin skinned folks around here!

Engineers are notoriously bad spellers, there's an OLD joke that goes; "Yesterday I couldn't spell engineer. Now I are one."

The Sydney Opera House is one of the world's iconic structures like the Empire State Building, Golden Gate Bridge, St. Louis Arch,
Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Brandenburg Gate, Taj Mahal, The Pyramids, The Spynx, etc. I have attended concerts, ballets, operas, and
plays in it's various halls. Between 2010 and 2013 the building and the surrounding area went through a $150 upgrading.

Regards,
Rob M.
