For those who missed it, Billy gave us a little nudge in his Dana thread.
Quote:You'll have to get with the program and get a Facebook account...
...Don't let the future pass you by guys. Get with it!
He's right.
Billy, what percentage of those 1000+ members do you estimate are owners?

I'm sorry but I really do not like FaceBook. It is kind of kludgey. It is like reading GMCnet using email only with pictures added. I go over there occasionally, maybe once a month, and look but it is too time consuming to wade through it.
I'll stay here.

THE problem with FB is the lack of archival information and the inability to store information. I'm on the FB GMC site and there are many, many new GMC owners who desperately need to do some searching here and on the photo site. Matt Colie, I, and others, have tried (and still do) to steer folks here and refer them to the photo site but we frequently get shouted down by fans of FB.
What I see on FB is the same questions being asked over and over and most of the really knowledgeable people that have helped me so much are not there and aren't going to be. The new folks don't know what they don't know and don't miss what they don't know existed.
It's kind of like what happened yesterday with Kayne West doing a duet with Paul McCartney. A lot of West's fans thought it was wonderful that they great Kayne was helping out a new artist. They didn't know who Paul McCartney is.
I enjoy FB but won't get into a indepth technical discussion because you simply can't in that format. I sometimes come here or to the albums, find the answer, and post a link.
And then there is indeed the privacy issue. I never post about any trips until after they are finished although since my youngest son is back home, I'm not as concerned about break-ins. The personal info I have posted isn't anything that isn't already widely known. I don't use my real birth date or address, never 'check in' anywhere (which lets folks know you are not at home) etc. Common sense really.
All that said, there indeed are a TON of new GMC owners that find the FB site first and are used to that type of social media. The problem is that the GMC community is much more than social and FB will NEVER be able to provide the technical side.
It would be interesting to know how many of the new FB owners also join here and the photo site. Billy do you have access to that info?

Bdub asked permission to post my "last 3 weeks on craigslist" updates. I think that's a damn good idea as it expands our reach when recruiting. Whatever you want, Bdub. You don't have to ask.
>privacy
I see many of you on FB (college, for instance) that I'd shy away from if you don't like tracking. Everything is a trade-off.
I joined (FB some months ago. The gmcmh group just days ago). And I'm the guy who gave up his pilot's license because I didn't like filing flight plans as I don't like people tracking me. In another world, I know a thing or two about tracking, security issues, etc. I took over an hour to disable and unlink many of the profile settings. I won't be friending many, if any. The account is to lurk, mostly --at least until I can build up a tolerance for that format.
>format
Let me be candid; IT SUCKS! I hate it --tooth-grindingly so. I'm not sure I will be able to cope with it. But you gotta go where you gotta go if you want to keep the breed strong. So, I'm clenching a thick leather strap between my teeth and going in.

I will say that from what I've seen of the FB group, they make the GMCNET members look like spendthrifts.

bdub wrote on Tue, 06 January 2015 10:09I imagine about 65% are owners. ...
Is there any way to know how many of those have registered their TZE and joined us here or in the albums. I can understand why some won't post here because to young folks "forums" are antique. What I can't easily assimilate is why they would not want to be where the information was, even it they only lurk.
It's kind of like folks who only read electronic books. Paper still works just fine, has more titles, and doesn't need batteries. I don't get it.
There are quite a few of the FB folks who are also members here and I don't want to offend anyone but I've noticed a tendency for younger folks to search for the instant gratification thing. I see that on our Metal Shaping site too. Young folks join with a passion to learn but leave as soon as they find out that they have to actually work at it to learn the skills. It isn't something you can just buy this tool or that widget and all of a sudden you are a Metal Shaper. The FB GMC page is a bit like that imo. Many folks just ask ONE question without trying to understand the big picture. As a result, they will probably go from small problem to small problem instead of going through the whole 'system' to ensure it is all good.
If all the FB crowd knows is what they see on FB, they are missing 80% of the knowledge, networking, and friendships imo.
I agree with Billy that we need to embrace these folks but imo, we need to pull them here and to the clubs, not to stay on FB alone.
I'm as thankful as it is possible to be for this forum and for the folks who have shared their time, knowledge, and energy to help me along the way.

I enjoy the Facebook group. It certainly shows that we have lots of younger, interested people in these old machines. It's not going to replace the technical expertise found here. It's also not going to be the kind of permanent repository that the photo site and Net have established. But it is going to be a vibrant community of people talking about GMC Motorhomes. We aren't going to convince people who like Facebook to revert to this older format. We also won't and shouldn't abandon the advantages that are found here.
So kudos to the people who go back and forth and share links and shuttle data. That is a real service for us all. But we don't have to be an either/or. Both can and should exist, even if it is a little less than optimal.

I agree - I think there is room for both and they fit very different needs.
In terms of privacy - I'd be more worried about the changes your government has instituted over the last 15 years or so (which has heavily influencing my government!) than anything FB does... That's a discussion for a different list, however...

76 Royale - Rear Twins/Dry Bath It is a discussion for a different list, but I try to help friends when I can, and the folks here are my friends.
You are dead wrong about the privacy threat. I can't tell you how I know what I know, but the Gov't is NOT interested in being Big Brother. OTOH, the social media sites are dedicated to using the information provided as profitably as possible, and the sites are a treasure trove to identity thieves. If you don't understand what I am saying, it is because you are as blissfully ignorant as a high school kid who doesn't prevent his "friends" from seeing him punch in his PIN at an ATM.
Apologies to Bdub, but friends don't encourage friends to use Facebook.

Are you suggesting that the average high school kid is fabricating ATM cards and cloning the cards of their friends? I guess one needs to choose their friends more wisely...

Oh you guys are just old and grumpy
But really, Facebook is all right, it will only have the information you give it, and what are the chances for a bad guy to spot you in there with 100 million users or more ? no need to worry about it, just use common sense.
And sure it is a hassle to keep a record over all the information given at the GMC site, but it is not bad information and you will get the same answers there as you will do here ( No offense ) It just works in a different way.
And it is so much more, GMC Motorhomes is just a tiny part of it all, It is great for keeping up with family and friends, to find people with common interests, play poker etc etc
For me it is not one or the other, I use both and are happy
