G'day,
David's email below piqued my interest so I "Googled ASCII Alt Codes" and got this link:
http://www.irongeek.com/alt-numpad-ascii-key-combos-and-chart.html
It is a listing of Alt + 3 digit and 4 digit codes for characters.
I've printed it out for future reference to enter symbols in the Plain Text messages on the GMCnet.
Ken,
Alt 247 = ?

a lot of extra keys can be found by holding the existing keys a bit
longer. Holding the zero key longer makes the ° key pop up
