Really nice workshop, and by the looks of it you will be doing a fantastic job on your coach.
I really need a shop like that for my race cars

Carl, I know it's been done before but I'd be interested in your process for lifting the body and pulling the frame out. Where did you lift and support?

Hi Kerry;
Yes, I have seen photos of how many of the members lifted the body. Here is what I ended up doing.
We want to do some restoration to the bottom side of the coach, so it was necessary to have it both safe and high enough to work under the coach while the frame is removed.
We manufactured a front and rear support structure, each are 24" tall.
The Rear support structure was designed to saddle the coach aluminum floor channels at the rear of the coach.
Rear Saddle
Rear Support
The Front support structure saddles 3' X 4" steel tube that is installed under the two forward aluminum channels.
Front Support with removable Legs and I beam for additional lift.
Removable front leg ( slides forward)
Finally wide lift device consisting of two raised bottle jacks and a 10' aluminum I-beam was built.
iBeam for lift while leg is removed
- There is enough room between the frame and body to insert a 4" X 3" X 24" Steel Tube. Installed length-wise this tube spans two of the floor channels, and a 4' tall clears the bottom of the body allowing room for a beam to be installed after the frame is lowered.
- Under the 4" X 3" tube is a saddled stand that can be removed ( a tall jack stand could also be used)
- Once the Frame is lowered from the body, the challenge is clearing the stands without having to first remove the wheels and bogie assembly.
Step 1: Raise the coach to 24" , supported by jack stands under frame.
Step 2: Install Front and Rear Support Structures
Step 3: Lower the frame (after you disconnect everything), body is now on support structure.
Step 4: Insert a 10' Beam at front between frame and coach body.
Step 5:With I-beam Lift Body 1/2" and remove front structure legs
Step 6: Roll frame out
Step 7: Reinstall front structure legs, lower front of coach 1/2 and remove I-Beam
Step 8: Connect structure supports and braces before work on bottom of coach begins
I expect you have seen this before but in case someone has not , here is how GMC did it.
(Does anyone know how were they attached the pickup cables to on the inside ?)

Carl,
Point of clarification; the Gadabouts you are trying to restore are TWO out of the original FIVE Gadabout's built and given away by
Coke?
Several times a week I check my eBay Search for GMC "stuff" and I'll keep an eye out for Coke Gadabout stuff for you.

Hi All
In 1977 Coke offered to sell promotional Gadabouts to their bottling plants
http://www.bdub.net/publications/Coke/Coke3.htm
I talked to Milt Wade about his Gadabout, as I recall, he indicated it had been purchased by the bottling plant in St. Louis.
Coke gave away 5 units in 1978, it would seem reasonable to assume they were 1978 models.
The Pawn stars unit is a 1978 so I presume it was a prize. Marge Noll recently sold a 1978, there is a '78 in a museum,
Serum has (had) a '78, and a '78 recently sold in Texas. Does anyone know if there are 5 Gadabouts with TZE168 serial numbers, and
if so, where are they.
I may be wrong (again) but I assume '77 Gadabouts are promotional and '78 Gadabouts are prizes.
Somebody with definitive information please correct me if I'm wrong.

Dave,
Here's a link to a good article about the GMC's produced for Coke: http://www.gmcclassics.com/robinson/ which I believe is the unit
you mentioned below as being sold recently in Texas.
If you review the photos of the Gadabout and then watch the video of the Pawn Stars Coke GMC you will note that the paint jobs are
different.
I am of the opinion that the one on Pawn Stars was:
a) NOT one of the five given away by Coke
b) was repainted
