When I bought the GMC, she came with the OEM steel wheels. The OEM hubcaps looked bad, ok for 1974 I guess, not today. And they made a lot, I mean a LOT of creaking noise when the GMC was moving. Jim B used to sell a plastic cap that was chrome looking, made from plastic and fit the OEM wheels. They actually were pretty nice. When I lost a cap and Jim B stopped selling these caps it was time to go to Alcoas.
My Alcoas are about 7, maybe 8 years old now. I've liked the clean look and have driven quite some distances with them. but they come complete with LUG NUT covers.
These covers are made of chrome look covered plastic, with little metal grabbers inside to hold onto the metal lug nut. I noticed I have at least one that has cracked and is splitting. To bring the GMC home for winter storage, I had to take the loose ones off for fear of losing them.
I am looking for a fix. It would be either buying all new covers, if available or try to do a repair.
FOR A REPAIR --- I am thinking using some of that silver duct tape, wraping around each lug nut cap to close the split and making the internal fingers fit tightly again.
To reinforce the tape and hopefully make it a more permanent repair, I was thinking using Cloth mat and epoxy resin along the INSIDE edge.
I realize that the caps MAY be available but I am thinking they have not been improved manufacturing wise and will crack again.
Has anyone else noticed this problem, if so, what was your fix?
