Hi John,

The spacers are there to allow our 16" wheels to clear the much larger brake calipers on the 1 ton front end. Drop a 16" wheel over a caliper laying on the bench and you will see quickly why the spacers. It would be great if we had wheel well clearance for 17" or 18" rims, but, we don't so spacers have to be there.

Any time we change anything even for the better (like the advantages of the larger front brakes and longer lasting bearings) we may well inherit some unintended consequences. So far the 1 ton appears to be a net gain for most owners under most circumstances. A few have experienced issues that seem inexplicable. When tracking down likely causes it is not uncommon to find a rare or unusual circumstance that is related to the issue. Change that unique circumstance and often the issue goes away or is lessened.

We need to keep firmly in mind that our coaches were designed for bias ply tires and radials behave quite differently. The 1 ton was designed for radial ply tires so we are mixing a couple of different things in order to gain the advantages. I have a completely stock front end on the Clasco and a completely modernized one on the Rpyale. Both coaches drive very well indeed, but do handle certain extreme conditions differently.

Hope this helps.

Jerry

If the tire /wheel centerline is outside (wider than) the steering axis through the ball joints it will dart at the point where power exceeds
available traction. I have never studied a 1ton up close, never worked on or driven one, and don't really understand the reason for the big spacers.
I'm just making the stearing axis statement based on photos. I know it increases the load on the Tbars with a longer lever arm effective length, so
someone please prove ne wrong.
