I see folks referring to their coach as a Royal from time to time. Is this just folks misspelling Royale or was there such a critter?

Kerry, in all likelihood, their cellular phone spell checker alters the
spelling. Mine does it all the time. Makes me soooooo mad. (Grin)

I believe that SOME cell phones offer the option of automatic spell correction OR simple notification that the stated spelling is contrary to THEIR idea of correctness and you can bypass it.

Not sure if mine gives one the option of either/or. It also changes
sentence structure as well as punctuation. It changes the meaning of
technical discussions quite often. Very frustrating at times. Galaxy Note
4. Great camera and video capability. Excellent Internet capability. No
clouds either. A.T. &T. cell service. Hot spot for my laptop too. Simply
amazing.

When we set up new computers, we always remind Word that 'WHTA' is valid. Otherwise, thier documents will refer to our lead Atlanta station as 'WHAT' which can be embarrassing.

Kerry,

I read all of the responses noting that nobody really answered your question.

Being the pedantic bastard that I am please be advised that as far as I know there has never been a ROYAL they were all ROYALE.

RC,

Like I said I'm a pedantic bastard so here's links to all the brochures that Coachman published regarding their coaches; please note
the spelling of the models.

http://www.bdub.net/publications/1976%20Royale/1976_Royale.htm

http://www.bdub.net/publications/1976%20Royale%202/76royal2.htm

http://www.bdub.net/publications/1977_Royale/1977royale1.html

http://www.bdub.net/publications/1978_GMC_by_Coachman/1978_GMC_Coachman.htm

Maybe whoever made up that drop down list might have mis-spelled it?

And to whomever that might have been, no offence meant.

RC,

I have seen Edgemonte spelled Edgemont maybe because of this:

http://www.bdub.net/publications/Edgemont/Edgemont.htm

Eleganza spelled Eleganzo.

On a personal note the Avion I have here in Sydney is listed as an Eleganz on the registration. I contacted the Roads and Traffic
Administration to see what I had to do to correct it and it was really complicated so I'll live with it even though it bugs the
pedantic bastard! ;-)

Again, Coachmen could trademark Royale. Royal has been in the public usage too long to do so. Some while back, G.E. named a lione of two way radios 'Mastr' for the same reason. Not to say that's why Coachmen did it, but a consideration. It >is< why we misspelled 'magic' as a name for one of our stations here.

The GMCMI sign up page ALSO has the misspelling - but I thought it was fixed last year when I pointed it out to Billy:

But it's STILL there!

That doesn't change the fact that Royal isn't a model. As Forest's mom

Spot on, Rob.

There is a philological term for people reading a term and selectively
dropping the correct spelling or pronunciation.

Royale is a name carried over from the Oldsmobile days. Coachmen felt that
adapting the name would help in solidifying its relationship as a product.
Neither GMC nor Olds people had a problem with that concept and actually
thought it was good for marketing reasons.

There is a vendor for TZE crowd that insists on spelling it "Royal". I'll
not reveal his name or the fact that he, himself, has a Royale.

I don't remember the term. I had it back in high school days by an English
teach who happened to be our varsity basketball coach. He was the best
English teacher I've ever had.

Rob, thanks for being pedantic.
