Yes, a transfer switch does make life easier and my wife can connect the
coach up now. Be sure though that when the contactor in the transfer
switch fails you know how to over ride it. You find out it has failed when
you try and use it and it will not work, this usually happens at a time
when it effects your level of enjoyment. The 2 highest failure devices in
electronics or electrical circuits are motors and relays. The transfer
switch is a high current relay thus is susceptible to the ravages of the
physical world. Humidity, temperature, current load, vibration all can
impact the device. I use them on about every restoration I do but I make
sure I wire it in and locate the component in a place that someone down the
road can figure out what's going on and can temporally get to the wiring
and bypass it if needed in a pinch.
#0 amp transfer switches are far less complicated and costly than a 50 amp
one, if you have a 6000 watt generator you really should use a 50 amp
model. In that you have a potential of 6000 watts coming out of your
generator, if you tax that suspect 30 amp transfer switch past it's design
perameters there could be a problem. Now it may be true if you only have 1
roof AC that in most cases your current requirement will not surpass a 30
amp contactor but what if someone not understanding current has the roof AC
blasting, the microwave gets fired up, the electric water heater cycles on
and then the blow drier goes on line? Pop goes the weasel!
I have and still do use a 30 amp transfer switch for proper applications
but just be sure you do not overtax the component because "current eats
technology every time"....

Jim, my switch is a 50A for that very reason. If someday down the road I get another AC or start having problems tripping the 30A breaker on the campground pedestal, I can change the 30A cord out for a 50AMP cord and be good to go. It will be a pain to do but the wiring is straight forward. My wire from the switch to the breaker box is 50A for that same reason.

I would simply locate the transfer switch box where it is easy to access and either with jumpers or just reconfigure the wiring to have what y ou need. You could go nuts and install a switch bypass but that adding compliation itself. Just always consider failure of any system and think of a countermeasure when it happens

I've wired them with enough slack in the box to pull the wires loose and wire nut them together. Just keep a few blue wire nuts handy for an emergency. Its worked for me.

Kerry,
Here's the IOTA ATS in Double Trouble: http://tinyurl.com/qxavgpq
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/under-double-trouble-27s-bathroom-sink/p36567-iota-auto-transfer-panel-c-2fb-panel-blue-sea-fuse-p
anel.html
After I bought this I found out that they stopped making them and from RV blogs I learned that they had problems with them. I
happened to be visiting Mac MacDonald in Oklahoma City and he mentioned he had one also but wasn't going to install it so I bought
it from him and carry it as spare.
Since I also have Xantrex inverter I have a second 30 amp ATS when power is being supplied by the Xantrex the second ATS is setup to
provide power to one wall plug and the microwave and not the whole 120vac system.

If you've looked at and are considering the 30A ATS I posted earlier, you
may be interested in how I control the load when on the 1200W inverter,
which obviously can't carry everything in the coach. Being able to do it
as I did is why I didn't include something like Mike Miller's improvements.
Most CB boxes have two separate busses, one for each leg of a 120/240 vac
supply. I was able to locate the "inverter loads" all on one of those legs
(had to use some "half width" CB's), and all the non-inverter loads on the
other. That automatically provided "load shedding" when the inverter is
active while not requiring any additional or dedicated wiring or sockets.

Ken,
As you (and everybody else) know I am electrically challenged, JimB worked out and wired up the system in Double Trouble.
The problem I have run into with the Xantrex is I only have two six volts 225 amp batteries in series and when I try and run the microwave it dies in less than a minute.
This problem was discussed in a recent thread and Jerry Work figgered out the problem.

Yep, microwaves don't provide that fast heating without a source of power.
I have a similar problem with my 1200 W. inverter and "1200 W" Sharpe
convection-microwave. While the MW will run on the inverter, it's
noticeably slower and "weaker" than with an adequate supply. I finally
quit trying to do more than get a cup of coffee a little warmer, for fear
of seriously damaging one or the other of them. I just crank the generator
if we need the MW without shore power.
If I were starting over, I wouldn't try to run the MW with an inverter
rated at less than 2KW.

Hi, Rob, and Merry Christmas!
Your battery bank is only theoretically good for a total maximum of 2700 Watts even if your inverter were 100% efficient. It's no wonder that it sags and dies in less than a minute.
Assuming a possible engine alternator output of 50 Amps at 13 Volts, that could theoretically stuff about 650 Watts back into the battery bank, but for a M/W oven drawing 1.5 kW, you are still fighting a losing battle.
I don't remember if you have an onboard genset, but that is the best method to run a M/W for the short time that they are normally used.

That is a lot of effort and money to waste to keep from starting and running the generator occasionally for a few minutes. Extra batteries are also a lot of extra and unneeded weight to haul around.

Ken,
No worries mate!
Well it's Christmas Day in the Hebron, any snow yet?
Christmas day was nice here but got nasty around 6pm when it began to bucket down with accompanying lighting and thunder.
Christmas lunch consisted of a shared dozen of Sydney Rock Oysters; a BBQ'd a steak for me and gourmet snags for Helen.
We followed that up with Blue Berries and vanilla ice cream.

A simple solution, park on the truck side of the rest area. Most of them never shut down their engines or refers and they will not
complain.
Sorry....
Merry Christmas Rob

No, we got no snow. I was very disappointing. The Weather Guessing Service screwed up again. The said 7" and we got nothing. Also the temperature never got below freezing. It is 8:45 AM here now. OAT reads 41 degrees. Off to 9:30 church and then to my Sister's at 12:30. No opening of presents until later afternoon. Our kid (Heather) will not be over until then. She worked the midnight shift and got home around 7:30 this morning. So she will sleep a while and then come over this afternoon.

Here's the Sharpe Microwave in Double Trouble:
http://www.sharpusa.com/ForHome/HomeAppliances/Microwaves/Models/R820JS.aspx
If you go click on the Tech Specs tab you will find this:
ADDITIONAL SPECIFICATIONS
AC Power Required (Amps): 13
13 Amps X 120 Volts = 1560 Watts
The Xantrex has a 2000 Watt capacity and more on start up.
Mac has noted that my two 6 VDC batteries have total maximum of 2700 Watts.
Question: to get the microwave to run I need:
a) How many 6 VDC pairs in series for 12 VDC connected in parallel to the Xantrex?

Yep, microwaves don't provide that fast heating without a source of power.
I have a similar problem with my 1200 W. inverter and "1200 W" Sharpe
convection-microwave. While the MW will run on the inverter, it's
noticeably slower and "weaker" than with an adequate supply. I finally
quit trying to do more than get a cup of coffee a little warmer, for fear
of seriously damaging one or the other of them. I just crank the generator
if we need the MW without shore power.
If I were starting over, I wouldn't try to run the MW with an inverter
rated at less than 2KW.

That is a lot of effort and money to waste to keep from starting and running the generator occasionally for a few minutes. Extra batteries are also a lot of extra and unneeded weight to haul around.
I agree Ken but once in a while I like to cook something late at night and it is nice to use the MW without waking everyone around me. I have plenty of inverter and battery capacity but the MW is still slower than when running on conventional AC. I wonder if the square wave is partially responsible.

Kerry,
Some (expensive) charger/converter/inverter units have integral automatic
transfer switches. Heart 2000+ inverters used to be the standard, but I
think they're part of Xantrex now & I don't know what they've got available.
Using the less expensive inverters is best done with a ATS, such as that
you're using for power line/generator switching. The GMCMHPhotos link I
offered shows both relays "in one". But as these discussions have
revealed, larger inverters don't really play well with our limited battery
banks. Realistically, something like our use of a 600W Mr.Coffee is about
all even my 1200W unit is good for.
