Found something interesting in changes with GM vans, and trucks after 1999. I had the blower stop working in my 1996 Chevy Astro van. Went to Auto Zone. Price seemed fine. $32. But the replacement blower was made in China. Had a lifetime warranty. So what. So I want to my local pull a part. $10, used, but made in the USA. That I trusted. There was a 2000 Astro. What I found was that the blower, and housing had a rubbery cover over the entire unit. It seems that GM wanted to insulate the motor, and blower housing from the heat, and cold under the hood. I'm thinking that we might get some improvements in our units by covering our's with that foyale bubble wrap. I know that the 77, and 78 heater/ AC are more effective. But any performance that can be improved. I'll take it. GM apparently thought the cost was worth the expense. Has anyone done this?Bob Dunahugh Member GMCMI 78 Royale

I've wondered if a blower out of say a 2015 Escalade could be addapted. I'm only guessing but maybe they have newer magnet tech like neodynium over alnico and might have more output with less current draw. I would think the blower wheel might be more aerodynamic. Compare fanjet efficiency in 2015 compared to 1973 with swept blades and such now. I know on my 97 Tahoe there is that cover on the blower but that would be for noise reduction as blower is in the passenger compartment under glovebox on those trucks.

John,
Your possibly correct on an more efficient blower, but one needs to realize
that the A/C coil moisture will not drip down when he surface velocity
exceeds 500 ft/min.

John. You might be onto something with regard to blower air out put. But as Jim covered well. Proper air flow is vary important with A/C units. But the point was that my e-mail was about insulating the blower, and heater/ AC box. Has anyone added insulation in this area?Bob Dunahugh Member GMCMI 78 Royale

Well I never thought about that. I don't know how to easily measure air speed at the coil. I know HOW but it's not easy to get to. Given the restrictions in air flow, I'd SUSPECT we can get quite a bit faster without a problem.

That said, no more dripping AC condensate would be an indication of too much air flow.

Kerry. The compressor, coil, and blower need to match each other. That's what Jim K was talking about. I'm talking about keeping the temps you've produced. Hot, or cold in the box to the inside of the coach. But the point was that my e-mail was about insulating the blower, and heater/ AC box. I would think a Dynamat reflective material might fit on most of the underhood air box and reject some engine heat when stuck in traffic. I usually use one of the middle fan speeds going down the road as at 65MPH you pick up considerable air flow from the ram effect IF you don't run in REC mode. This keeps slight positive pressure in the cabin as well.

I understand that Bob but what I'm not confident of is if the restrictions in the GMC air handler box for the GMC cuts down on the air flow across the coil. They used the same fan as in much less restrictive systems in big cars so I'm pretty confident that they just grabbed the biggest fan in their parts bin and stuck it on the box and hoped for the best. In the early coaches, there wasn't very much air. My 77 is 'OK' but could be better.
