Can anyone advise if here is good off-road car fun to be had near quartzite? One of my GMC friends said "I think so." Worth towing a car from LA?

Thanks

Most of the land around Quartzsite is BLM land. This is the case where I
live in CA (Ridgecrest). There are areas designated OHV (Off Highway
Vehicles). You can check The BLM website to check for OHV areas around
Quartzsite.

Yes, all the BLM land around Quartzite is open for off roading. We have
explored the areas NE of town and haven't found anything too challenging,
but still lots of fun. We always tow our Sidekick. There are geocaches
scattered throughout the area. Check out the app c:Geo and website

What Margie said. Big time geo caching. Nearly any car will take you anywhere you need or want to go at Q. We have used our vibe gt with fat tires and six speed gear box. You will see nice toads running around there. We have a dub baja that we will be dragging out next time we make it there.

One January I spent a week out there visiting my friend Dan G. I did a lot of off road stuff in my 4WD Blazer on both the east and west sides of the Yuma Proving Ground. I also went over the Ethrenberg and traveled south along the Colorado river to Cibola and the Cibola Nature preserve. I got stuck a few times in 4WD running up some of the side roads (really paths) but it was always up hill so I could back out of it. There are some decent size rocks out there on the east side and you need a medium clearance vehicle on some of those paths.

Note: There is a privately constructed bridge over the Colorado river at Cibola that puts you in California farm territory so you can come back on good flat paved roads should you want to.

This year Ada, Jim Galbavy's better half will be out there in the big tent
helping out in the Fire Fight booth. She wouldn't let Jim come this year
so be sure to stop by and give her a little support. She will be there in
Mac the fire guy's booth.

Remember, fires happen -- are you ready?

We went down there a couple years in a row to hang out with the Greggs, and have since used the free BLM area, south of town at Mile Marker 99, as an overnight stop. We haven't made it down there since Dan and Teri have not been able to go (not as much fun). This year we are heading to Joshua Tree National Park for the beginning of the week of 1/5, and finishing up the week at the FMCA Western Area rally in Indio from the 7th to the 11th.

The GMC Saguaro Jetset then has a rally at the Pinal County (AZ) Fairgrounds 1/22 - 1/25:

http://www.gmcsj.com/2014/03/january-22-25-2015-blue-grass-festival-casa-grande-az/

It's kind of a 'low maintenance' rally where everyone has a lot of fun.

The only year I was there I met you down at "99". I was hoping Dan would be able to make it this year. I he were to make it, I would drive down there too.

Oh well, There is always 2016.

That's right Ken. The way I remember it, we were instrumental in getting Dan's sensitized brake booster installed. (HA! Let's see what HE has to say about that).

If Dan and Teri were going to be there this year, we would have made it a priority too.

I remember doing a sensitized booster on his coach. He did most of the work. I do not remember doing it at Quartzsite. Oh well, my memory is not that great these days.

I sure hope Dan and Teri can make it next year.

It ain't that she won't let me. Just that: One/ Paying for my expenses
eats into the profit margin. Now that MAC the FIRE GUY has had a year +
since his knee surgery, He, Mac's wife and Ada can do fine without me.
....and two/ I get some quality time with ANNIE. .... and get ready to dive
in Belize and Cozimel (sp?).

Yeah, he did pretty much ALL the work and gave us a hard time for not helping (much)

OPEC is up to something. I don't know what, but it will be bad when they kick it off.

It's not too hard to suppose what they are up to - killing the Russian economy - making tar sand extraction a looser - basically removing competitors like any good monopolistic empire would.

For us it means we can travel for less money.

I play in the small sand lot - not the big leagues.

Front page story, yesterday's WSJ. "Behind OPEC Decision, Saudi Fear of U.S. Shale". Title sums it up.
Interesting chart showing the price per barrel for the various countries need to balance their budget. Their brand of State Socialism is to keep the masses happy, and this requires money. The Arab States have very little else to trade for external income.
Not much GMC content, but I'm very happy to burn gas from $61.38 a barrel oil.
