Our coach has the sofa that converts into bunk beds and it's not all that comfortable so we'd like to replace it with a more conventional sofa. My wife is dead set against a pair of easy chairs so no point going down that path.
I'd also like to see what others have down to address the transition to the step as well.
And now that I think about it, perhaps just replacing the back of the sofa might be an even easier option. Has anyone done that?

I got the sofa from Jim Bounds. It is very comfortable for sitting. I have never slept on it, but my son sleeps there when we go to the dunes and says it is comfortable, but firm. My other son didn't find it very comfortable, and TOO firm. We love the look of it and again, it IS very comfortable to sit on.
You should be able to see, in the album, that I had to space it up from the floor to get it to clear the step. It also is NOT a zero clearance unit and needs to be spaced out from the wall a few inches in order to fold it out into a bed. If I were to re-do it, I might try to install it so it would slide back the extra few inches to give us more room between the sofa and the dinette, but the tight space is only a minor inconvenience.

Ken,
When we did the total interior on our 1977 coach I removed the bunk bed portion of the couch. I had the base recovered and extra support and foam added to make it a sleeping mattress and then the back was 3 cushions that we remove and put in the passengers seat when sleeping. In this picture you can see how the back cushions were made by Margrette Guske who did all the work for us. If you have other question please ask!

Nice work Carl, perhaps a bit more than I care to do. I don't need a convertible sofa but even if I never used it as such, that's a great looking setup.
