Actually, the charge profile for an AGM and a lead acid battery are not all that different according to the Lifeline, Interstate and Optima web sites. The difference is between a wet cell or AGM and a gel cell battery where the charge profile is quite different. I have wet cell batteries in our Royale and AGMs in the Clasco and both use current generation three stage smart charger/converter units (one PD the other Iota). Both sit plugged in for long periods of time without harm. Both have been discharged below 50% at times and recharged without harm. The AGM can take a higher float voltage than can the wet cell, but both live well on the same first and second stage charge voltage.

I think in this case there must have been something wrong with the AGM battery or the charger or the load.

I have a red Optimus battery in my off road car. They will internally self destruct if presented with the initial high voltage that "smart chargers"
apply to a lead/acid battery. This was a lesson learned the hard way for me. .
