| Anyone else have a "Blast Furnace" in their GMC?? [message #266148] |

Let me start by saying that the temps have been in the teens these last 4-5 nights so I have been sleeping in the MH since my wife likes to have the dogs inside when the temps get low, and I do also. She has a 13 year old Chocolate Lab that snores like a banshee.
Therefore I choose to camp out.
When my furnace first starts up, it sounds like a blast furnace, really deep throaty noise, after 15 seconds of that I get another 25-35 seconds of a higher pitched "tuning fork" type of sound.
Anyone else.

The fix for this is to adjust the air intake to the burner. It rotates. Give it a little more air. The flame should not be a sharp blue and also not a yellow color. Adjust it in between.

I said the same thing, she's old and getting ready to go. Her arthritis is pretty bad in her hips and the meds are expensive. When it gets this cold...... 21 degrees tonight, I feel like a better person letting her sleep at the foot of the bed. Makes the wife happy as well, and we all know the old saying "a happy wife equals yada yada".

Sir, I had a whistle that adjusting the air would change the sound but not eliminate . After we got a co detector it would start barking about the 3rd furnace cycle. There was a small hole in the burner. Could have been bad.

I received a private email from another member that suggested I should place a piece of cardboard or similar material between the exhaust vent and intake vent on the exterior of the coach, was outside having a smoke when I heard the furnace fire off and sure enough I stuck my hand in between the vents and the howl stopped, pulled my hand away and it slowly started again.
Seems like I need to come up with a deflector that points the exhaust more towards the rear of the coach. That will help to keep the exhaust air from being drawn back into the intake which theoretically should eliminate the howl.

Sure --
Go to GMCMI.com
And click on The GMC Motorhome. Then click Technical Information. Then GMC Basic Info. On the right click Furnishings and scroll down to Solaire Furnace. You will find a PDF file that was scanned years back from the manual that came with my 77 Kingsley.
You can also find it on BDUB'S site as I sent it to him years ago to post there

Jared,
You might want to research old forum messages about the Sol Aire furnaces.
A few years bask when I was having trouble with mine I was told that old Sol Aire's are dangerous because of combustion chamber cracking and CO leaking as Chuck Boyd mentioned. It's not difficult to change out to a newer Suburban furnace.
You needed another project.

My SolAire is still in the garage waiting for me to disassemble it and have a look at the burner chamber among other things before it's returned to the coach - if it ever is. The Dometic heat pump is good for chill temps. I've a stand alone electric heater and after borrowing one from Stick Miller, I've also got an electric blanket. These plus a BWD for my feet and I'm not convinced I need the furnace anyhow. My CO detector works - it let me know the vent for the icebox wasn't sufficient. That vent now has fans and I've had no further alarms.

Thanks everyone for the replys and information. Today I was able to eliminate the growl, now it just sounds off when the burner first lights, split second rumble and then quiet...... except for the howl. It is definitely the exhaust on the outside of the coach. I tried to see if I could eliminate it with a temporary baffle separating the intake and exhaust but didn't really work at all. The howl is pretty loud too, inside and outside the coach, more so outside.
Also bought a CO detector with digital display in PPM. Ran the furnace full blast for 3 hours and it was still at 0. No leaks I guess.
Just that damned howl, goes away after about 30-40 seconds.

Jared,
Chuck Boyd can 'splain about measuring gas pressure in water inches. I watched him do it with a "redneck/homemade device" while I was stranded/camped in his driveway waiting for a Manny Tranny delivery by Ken Burton a few years ago.
But that's another GMC adventure story in itself. Chuck got his furnace fixed; Ken brought the tranny 500 miles pro bono and I got the coach (wasn't mine) delivered to California. Those Mid Western an Southern boys know how to git 'er done and enjoy doing it.
Evidently, Chuck's furnace is still functioning.
