I've seen several Cadillac 425 engines hang around on Craig's list for months for not much money. Seems like the engine isn't in much demand when 472 and 500s are also around but for 2 to 3 times the money. The 425 could be a cheap swap to bring a dead GMC back to life.

I imagine the same tricks used on the 500 could also be used on the 425 to bring its output up to 400+ ft lbs and 200+ HP. The swap should also be about the same effort as as 500 as the engine externals are similar.

Just a thought...

Jerrod, Cheap if all one does is buy the engine and install it. I wonder how many people who have gone through an engine failure would do JUST that. I personally would want to tear down whatever engine to be installed and see what its condition was.

Yes!!Some folks like a 403 over a 455 cause gas.A 425 would be similar and cheap and plentiful.

The 368 and 425 are gutless wonders and I question their durability in a motorhome application. Also consider that a number of weight saving measures were taken with the 425, probably compromising integrity of the motor. Not sure what they were, but windowed main webs, reduced crankshaft counterweights, thinner walled blocks. etc. come to mind. 472s and 500s are built like tanks.

That reputation is most likely why they're available for cheap.

Its not a common hot rod engine.

A 425 Oldsmobile engine from a 66 or 67 Toronado would be a much better choice than a 425 Cadillac. The main difference from a 455 is shorter stroke and they seem a lot less prone to rod bearing failures than the longer stroke 455. The 425 also has a forged crankshaft. Heads are interchangeable between a 455 and 425 Olds so you could lower the compression ratio if desired on the 425 by using 455 heads. If anybody wants a 425, I have a few on hand.
