After installing a new steering box from Dave Lenzi and rebuilding my PS pump, I also replaced both PS hoses. I got the high pressure hose made at a local hydraulic outlet. The return line I got at NAPA. The guy at NAPA said this is the stuff you need.... The old hose was just a rubber hose with a hose clamp at each end, it didn't appear to be anything special.

A couple weeks ago I noticed the return hose was dripping a bit at the pump end. Tonight I went to tighten the clamp and noticed the whole return hose is coated with PS fluid from one end to the other. It seems like the whole hose is breaking down and seeping PS fluid.

Is there a proper hose for the PS return line?

Thanks

I wouldn't use heater hose it is not rated for oil use. Most any neoprene hose that is rated for oil use should suffice the pressure rating doesn't need to be high like the discharge side as the return line is low pressure.

Use the type of hose that you would use for a transmission cooler line. Low pressure fuel line will also work.

Bruce,

Unless someone has measured the pressure in hose between the steering box
and the windshield wiper motor, I'd stick with a high pressure hose for
that section. From the wiper motor to the PS pump reservoir, 'most any
hydraulic hose should suffice since it's not pressurized.

Rob,
Thanks for the link, but we have as many O'Reilly's here in Canada as I'm guessing you have down under.. zero!

The stuff I got from Napa appears to be swelling. I know some oils react with some types of rubber that way.

Ken,
I have your electric wipers, so this is just direct back to the PS pump. I'll go back to the hydraulic guy and see what he recommends

Thanks!

I just replaced mine a coupe of weeks ago. I had the replacement hose in my collection of left over hose pieces. It was specifically labeled on the hose for power steering use. I'll try to remember to look at it the next time I'm out where my GMC is parked. The piece fit perfectly so I had none left over. I have no idea where I got it from. It probably was Auto Zone or Carquest.

Look on RockAuto. They have a bunch of them listed by different manufacturers. It looks like the hoses meet SAE J189 spec.

Here are some:

Gates

There are more numbers listed but this ought to get you started.
