OK. First time I took the half shafts out of the coach. It is a 1 ton conversion. The information on the forum and elsewhere was invaluable.

Now I have the first one apart and have the parts cleaned out but not with mineral spirits. The bearings look alright as does the inner race and cage. The outer race has two gouges that I have been able to see and I am wondering if it means the outer race needs to be replaced.

I think I captured both of them in this picture:

I know doing this by pictures is hard, but I am hoping someone with more experience than this computer programmer will be able to tell me. If not, when in doubt replace it.

Thanks

Mike,

You say that's a 1-Ton conversion??? Manny's? How many miles?

As for replacement, that fractured corner and debris bothers me enough that
I'd replace it, never mind the "gouges". Even though the corner is
probably not functional, I'd be concerned about how that happened and want
to be be sure it didn't happen again. That, of course, assumes you didn't
have anything "personal" to do with the damage. :-)

I'd replace based on the wear.

JMHO -- with no great experience to support it.

Ken,

The PO told me it was a Manny conversion. He also guessed around 5000 miles on the conversion. We all know how fast those miles can go before we know it, so it could be more.

I don't believe I did the damage since I didn't work too hard at getting it apart. I didn't notice or feel any metal fragments, but I wasn't look for them either. I was expecting clean results. Not sure why since the boot had come apart.

Rob M. agrees with you, so I will look into replacements.

Thanks to everyone on the forum. It has been a big help keeping me going.

Mike,

Look at the heads of the bolts holding the lower ball joint to the A-arm.
They're probably hex heads and are responsible for the damaged boot.
Contact Manny for replacement Grade 8 carriage bolts to replace those,
providing more clearance.
