In my wandering around on another project (steering relay lever), I found this

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/OTC0/7822A.oap?ck=Search_gm+torsion+bar+tool_-1_2442&keyword=gm+torsion+bar+tool

They had it as part of their rental tool collection, and said I had to return it in two days to get my full refund. The two day thing doesn't sound right... but curious if anyone has experience with this tool? I brought one home and it did not clear from the front side, but did seat properly in the recess if I put the "C" towards the rear of the coach. I did not load it up, I just brought it home to see if it would clear. Seems like it would be fine.

I used one that looks a lot like it.

Actually I bought it. Did not know I could rent it. Not a lot of clearance to get at the adjuster bolt, but it did work.

Chris,

While that tool does not match the photo in MM X-7525 / Section 3A Front Suspension / Page 3A-14 / Figure 16 - Removing Torsion Bar
it will work OK; I carry one in Double Trouble. It is important to grease the socket where the tool presses on the pork chop and the
threads of the tool with black moly grease. Also be careful when you turn the tool, Terry (Bullithead) reported that one he had
broke and sent parts flying across his shop. Chuck Boyd has noted that turning the adjusting bolt 6 turns will raise or lower the
coach 1 inch. After each adjustment you will need to drive the coach to get it to "settle" at the new adjustment.

That's off the top of my head, I'm sure you'll get more suggestions from others here.

The tool that broke on Terry was not this C shaped OTC unloader but was a U bolt style. Message #254281

"Rob, I gave the tool back to the guy so he could try to get it replaced under warranty and then he later told me that he could not get it replaced free and was going to have to buy another one to do the bars on the late model GM trucks. It was not the ball joint press type that is in the picture you linked to. It was a large U-bolt that went over the crossmember and a 1 inch square cross block with a 9/16 pressing screw. The U-bolt broke. It did not look or feel like a homemade setup as the u-bolt was very hard, but he said that it was his grandad's tool and I did not see a brand name on it. I won't see him for at least another week when he comes back from vacation, but when I do I will see if he saved the parts and get a pic of them."

This was one of the reasons I used the big C.

Wally,

Goes to show you that my memory is as the Irish say; "shite." ;-)

I made two of the U-bolt types here in Australia and used 9/16" diameter U-bolts and a 1 1/2" thick block. The pressing bolt is
grade 8 3/4 NF and tapers down and has a ball bearing in the end. I copied the one that Dave Lenzi made for himself, it's as good as
it gets!

Would you believe: I've got two of the conventional U-bolt tools, both of
which have seen considerable service. Last week, Nick Knowlton and I
installed a 1-Ton under his coach. About 2/3 the way toward relieving the
R torsion bar, there was a big BANG and the forcing screw backed out all
the way to the crossbar! Yep, stripped out completely!

Nick's planning to install a larger forcing screw, but I'm thinking I'll
check with O'Reilly's the next time I need one.
