I looked in the manual and couldn't find how to open the cannister for removing the filter. Is it from the top? Or is it the strap towards the middle of the unit. If it is at the top how does it get off. Turning the top prying the top, or is the strap undone and then it simply come out?? Thanks, once I get that done I'll reinstall the vapor line.

The changeable filter is at the bottom. Do not mess with the top, it is very fragile. I think the filter is to prevent dirt from getting into the system as air is drawn through the bottom. I never did figure out how to get that filter in/out but broke one of the fittings on the top trying so had to buy a new canister.

Yup, that is why there is a filter. GM part 7026014.
It's simple to change. The filter is a flat disc about 4 inches in diameter and 3/8" thick. It sits in a recess in the bottom of the canister that is probably only 3 1/2" in diameter. The smaller diameter holds the filter in place. The whole bottom is open on the original style canister. You have to unfasten the canister from its mounting and access the bottom surface. Just use caution around the vac tube fittings as they are fragile. You have to kinda scrunch up the old filter to get it out. And you have to distort the new filter a little to force it in to place.

In the late 80s they changed the design, sealed the bottom and added a fresh air vent to the top. Service parts would be like this, so some may no longer have a serviceable filter on the bottom.

The cannister does not come apart to change the filter. The filter is a pad of fiberglass. It is removed by pulling it out of the bottom of the filter. The new one is just worked in where the old one came out. On some filters, my california emissions option for one, the cannister may have to be removed from the mounting bracket to get at the filter.

thanks for the info, I'll work on it from the bottom up and disregard the top. And yes I was and will be careful around the vac fittings!!!

What make and part number did you use to replace your canister with??

What application did you use when asking for that part??

Do you still have the old one?

Did you take apart and inspect the old one?

I don't know the numbers - I ordered from Applied GMC and it was identical to the old one.
Sorry, I threw the old one out without looking inside. I had tried to repair the broken fitting on top but no success.
I wish I had looked a little closer at the time but didn't - all good now though.
