Norcold Fridge Rant

Knowing what I now know, I would never buy a Norcold 2 door fridge for a
GMC. Some of the one door models may be useable, by moving the comprtment
floor up to the lower vent, but not the two door models.
Wonder why??? Download the installation manual from www.thetford.com,
and read pages 3 & 4. Obviously, I didn't do this. Bottom of the lower
vent must be at, or below the fridge compartment floor. And the
installation must follow their instructions for vents and baffles
EXACTLY!!!, or no warranty whatsoever. $1400 plus all the Camping world
and Curtis Trailer service after it died (total over $2k) down the tube,
when it failed after about 2 months of actual use (about 10 months after
purchase. Bought a new Amish built cooling unit for $700, had it
installed by a mobile RV repairman for $325...Now have cold beer in the
fridge. Well, I did have cold beer in the fridge until I drank it.
RANT OVER

Most of you could replace the cooling unit yourself, it's not all that
difficult. Getting the fridge out of its hole is the hardest part. Good
instructions with the new cooling unit. Instuctions also available
online from
rvcoolingunit-info@comcast.net
Dometic may hassle you about the baffles and vent, but their installation
manual did not state "Don't follow the instructions exactly, don't get a
warranty".

By the way, I have no complaints about the lifespan or quality of the
Norcold 2 door units. Until it died with a spray of ammonia, last year,
my previous unit lasted well over the 10 years we've had the coach, with
no problems. Previous owner bought coach in 1987. His records don't
mention replacing the original swing AC/DC unit, so the Norcold unit
might have been there when he bought the coach.
