All of our windows leak so they have to come out to be resealed.

What I would like to do is replace them with the 2nd gen windows if I can find a set of takeouts that I can rebuild and swap.

Anybody have a set of 2nd gen windows they will sell?

Second choice would be to rebuild the first gen windows that are in the coach.

Do the 1st and 2nd gen windows use the same felt channels?

Is there a source for the screens for the 1st gen windows? Our front sliders are missing the screens, the back 2 have them.

Thanks for all your insight.
Brian

Jim Bounds is a good source for replacement felts. Jim has a pretty good video on installing new felt channel. He does it amazingly fast. Lots of practice helps the learning curve. Do not forget to cut out the drain holes.
Only source for screens is take-outs. Last year, I had all of the screens. No one wanted them and forced to toss them in my retirement move.
Do not reinstall the windows on silicon caulk. Use the butyl rubber tape.
Screens from 1st generation and 2nd generation are different and will not switch.
Good luck on your search.

We just replaced our original windows with 2nd Gen CR Lawrence windows from MotorHome Enhancements. Jim K carries them also. Have about 3 months and 3500 miles in them with no leaks and less wind noise.

Hi Kerry, are those the ones that don't open or have the small slider in the bottom?

What is the source of your leak?

When I did some outside work on the GMC, the sealant around the frames was gone. I still didn't have any leaks but resealed them.

another source is when the drains get plugged or the rubber/felt shifts and covers the drain slot in the almuninum. If you don't get rid of that water, it will spill over into the motorhome.

If the windows are still whole and not damaged, they are worth keeping. The paint on the frames wears off but paint them and they look like brand new. Been there done that....

The newer windows with the bottom sliders really look good but unless you have a fan blowing air in or out, they are terrible for ventilation.

Just my thoughts.

All of the above... They need to be rebuilt and resealed. The later windows are what I want because the screens don't have to be moved to open the window, the movable pane is on the inside so the track would be less likely to fill up with debris and cause the slider to not work properly and the 1 piece frame would less likely to leak in the future.

I would prefer to stay with the OEM windows for the ventilation and egress they provide.

They have the slider at the bottom. Frequently called "T-slider windows". If I recall correctly, they are $1554 plus freight from the nearest CR Lawrence warehouse. It was about $1650 delivered to me including freight from their Atlanta warehouse. CR Lawrence is a big outfit and has warehouses all over.

The don't have as much screen area as the original windows but no one is going to come in through an open window and they are quieter and don't leak. We are happy with the money spent.

We have the T slider windows and love them. We often us our Fantastic fan
to pull air through the lower part of the window and out the top. The air
is traveling a lower path (body level) so we feel more air movement than
with the original windows. Only drawback is emergency egress. We keep A
small hammer in the bedroom for that reason.

Margie,

Hope you are using a pointed hammer designed for breaking auto glass. A regular
hammer will bounce back and hit you. Also when you strike the glass, make sure
that your handle strikes the window frame on the follow thru so you don't cut your
hand, arm or wrist. You might want to check with the manufacture as to what they
recommend.
JimB, Mac the Fire Guy and I cover this type of emergency egress in our fire safety
talks.

I understand the entire rear window is an emergency egress. It came from the factory with a release that will allow the window to drop out. My Owner's Manual says:

"EMERGENCY EXIT
The rear window of the vehicle can be used as an exit in an emergency. To use the emergency exit, pull the ring located at the top center of the rear window until window seal is removed, and then push the glass out of the frame. Do not pull ring except in case of emergency. The window is not hinged, and it is designed to be pushed out. Take care that window will not fall on anyone outside the vehicle. Be careful of possible broken glass on ground when exiting from the vehicle."

That cable and ring might have worked over 35 years ago when they wrote that.
When was the last time you heard of one working and not breaking off in your hand.
I don't know about you but I'm not hanging my life or the lives of my family on it.

That's one approach. Lug around a hammer and hope you can find it when you need it instead of keeping the emergency exit latch serviceable.

I am not sure how get a new ring on the window gasket lock rope. Then there is the problem with curtains and rear gun cabinets.
I had no trouble getting an Emergency Escape Tool, piece of string and a broom clip. It is now placed conspiciuosly in the back.

Jim,

If the rear window is one of those that turns into a gazillion little pieces you can use a spring loaded center punch like this:

Here is something I posted way back in 2002:

>
>
As several people have replied, there was originally a little metal wire ring at the top center of the window that started the rubber lock strip to pull open. You can easily fashion one out of a small piece of stiff wire. Make the round part about the size of a quarter and fashion two legs about an inch or so long. Open the rubber strip about an inch and push the legs of the ring wire behind and push the rubber back into place over the wire legs.

In the event that you want to use the window as an emergency exit, pull the ring so as to start to "unzip" the rubber insert. Then grab the rubber and pull it completely around the window. The glass can then be easily pushed out so that you can use the opening as a fire escape. Of course, if you have a ladder and a spare tire, the glass might not move out of the way, but you can probably push the glass to one side. Since it is laminated safety glass the edges are not sharp so you can grab it and shove it to one side without worrying about cutting your hands.”
