guys, please bear with me as I try to figure out how to reply via email to the forum. I cant log into the forum directly, I emailed batman for resolution but have not received a reply from him.

@biggreen
I think you are right that 11-73 would be a '74 model

@ bdub
great website you have! has been instrumental in finding great info on the GMCs. thanks

@ Otterwan
yes, the plastic V.I.N. plate was red flag to me then add in the fact that the number had a nine instead of one and another digit indicated a 1976 according to the popular info out there on the subject..

I want to verify it is not something fishy going on with it so I joined the forum a week ago but have issues logging in. now I found a way to post to the forum via email but not sure how to send a reply so that it ends up in the proper thread and not starts a new one. still hoping batman can respond to my email so that I can use the forum directly.

@ emorystora

that is encouraging! hopefully someone else can confirm? not that I dont believe you but I want to be as certain as possible before I make a deal on it.

some other notes:

the glove box is not the very early style, it is like most others, just wish the sticker was still there.

the door jamb switch is mounted at the top pf the jamb.

it has the exposed screw heads on the hoods where they upgraded to a larger hinges but doesnt show evidence of the early single latch in fiberglass surrounding the opening.

the numbers on the frame also do not make sense and mostly look like chicken scratch but they dont look so much as if they have been altered.

the heater vents are early style:

thanks for chiming in on this guys! sorry if this post does not go in the thread correctly. (how can I reply via email in the same thread instead of it starting another thread?

and I gotta say, I was only interested in this for dry storage and because its so close to me but after seeing how well liked they are (still) and how much info is out there on them I think I want to make a project out of it and get it running!

just gotta be sure its on the level with proper VINs first.

I'll post more photos and info later as I get more info.

thanks

Let's get this straightened out.
When Emery speaks, he knows.
The thing was sitting in a field for 10 years and it's an early 73. It was
a parts purchase originally?
It's not worth anything except pocket change if you want to torture
yourself.
I'm sure you have a name and that you live somewhere, perhaps you could
share that info with us.

First, regarding your plate in the other post, GVW should be 10,500 lbs not 11,200 if it was an early coach.
Your frame number looks like it has been added, I have never seen a original stamping look that, after playing with it I get T4V100322 the one that is messed with could end on 100036 but to hard to tell
11-73 would be a -74

Do you have more pictures ? the interior can say was it is.

Emery is not wrong very often, but I would like to hear from JShot on this.

That's the most messed up vin I ever seen on a TZE. Look on the frame,
below the kitchen window to see if you can find a number stamped into it.

I would be very leery about those numbers on the frame. Those sure don't look like GM numbers.
The numbers that GM stamped on the frame are upside down and are found on the outside of the frame below the large passenger side window behind the driver's seat.
Check those out.

This could still be forged numbers.

My '74 with a build number of 150 and a sticker date of 12-10-73 has the standard VIN plate we are familiar with The frame stamp matches and is located where Bdub stated.

A couple of things I think I didn`t see. No refrigerator vent on side and no tank drains. I think GMC made specialty coaches as blood mobiles, post offices, etc. Also I didn`t think transmodes were actually advertised till 75? Still might be a real GMC? Where is Bill when you need him???

1gmcmh said :

hi all, do the frame numbers on all TZEs match those of the side plate and the plate under the hood?

@ emerystora
this photo shows the numbers I find "below the large passenger side window behind the driver's seat"

http://i.imgur.com/PXmtlyS.jpg

@ bdub
these two new photos show the numbers "below the kitchen window"

I have scrubbed a little more of the rust away for these photos;
first without camera flash:
http://i.imgur.com/0DUjeic.jpg

with flash:
http://i.imgur.com/NVdsGN2.jpg

you can now see that those marks I thought looked like "chicken scratch" are actually Xs! so the upsdie down number has been x'd out..

these appear to me to have been done prior to a body/coach being mounted and by a right handed hammerer. thats why one section of the X is stamped deeper.

Im not sure why they would X out that number unless it was somehow wrong. either by a mis-stamp or whatever.

so my main question is do the frame numbers match the V.I.N. plate and outside plate to lower left of the door?

I would really like to have a photo of another coach that has a similar V.I.N. plate as this one (plastic held in with screws) as emorystora mentioned he has seen before.

is there any verifiable GMC documentation on V.I.N.s?

would there be a federal code from '73-'75 that specifies exactly how motorhome V.I.N.s shall be made and attached?

Im starting to think its just a case of factory oddities more than anything else unless some official documentation shows otherwise.

You Xd out upside down number is the original vin number, the one below it is punched in after the body was placed on the frame, it is not on a line as the original number and you can see that it has more pressure on the lower parts of the digits indicating that the dies has been held at an angel when punced.

And yes the V10XXXX should be identical on the frame and Vin plate on the passenger firewall. the plate next to your door is not important.

Having strange dreams are we?
Any chance one of dreams had me winning a lotto? I'll be looking after
anyone who was pleasant to me over the years. You'll be on it and maybe one
or two others...
