Lots of discussion about this dual fuel issue during his presentation. Alternatives offered ranged from using one tank for diesel and the other for gasoline to diesel generators to powering the Onan via propane. The first dozen or so installations will shed light on a number of questions like this.

While I do like Diesel power in cars in general, I wonder if a Diesel
engine is such a good idea. After all, you know only need a new engine,
but also a new generator. Aren't there gas engines available that
provide comparable power and, with adjustments, do fit into a GMC?

That's a concern for the dry campers and such. I use the genset so infrequently, I could chuck a 7 gallon gas can on the back bumper, and fill it and use it if/when I needed.
Since I wasn't there, what engine are we referring to? The humvees we got as FANGs in the mid 80s - with two digit build numbers yet - had an engine which was reminiscent of the Olds 350 unit, complete with poor reliability. I had thought the newer ones used an industrialized version of the vortec unit currently fitted to pickups. Not the case?
