Now that my SEVERAL years long ordeal with the GMC and it's hesitation and power loss is being worked on, I feel positive that we have finally got this one over with. This brings me to the next hurdle, the Tires.
The Current set were bought over 6 years ago and though they have been great, that time limit for use has passed and I can see those micro cracks in the side wall. I have been assured that this has no bearing on the tires usability but I don't want to tear up the GMC's sidewalls with a tire self destructing.
I have been looking around for different types of tires and found a tire at TIRE RACK. Ok, I am NOT associated nor do I work for TIRE RACK but I am a customer.
LINK: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=XPS+Rib&partnum=275R6XPSR
MichelinXPS Rib(Highway Rib Summer)
Size: LT225/75R16
Sidewall Style: Blackwall
Load Range: E
UTQG: None
Price: $270.00 (each)
Cost is high per tire but reviewers claim these tires do not suffer from the time limitations like other tires do. They are bold enough to say the tire is expensive to purchase but you save in the long run because you can run them longer.
Any thoughts on this comment????
There is/was a GMC owner that made a review....
Initial Review, 30,000 Miles on Tires
October 21, 2004
I put these tires on my 1979 gmc motorhome in 1995
they still look brand new and they preform as good as new
And other Motorhome owners comments.....
Initial Review, 56,000 Miles on Tires
November 24, 2005
HOLIDAY RAMBLER OWNER
Tires were mounted on a 1994 Holiday Rambler 34 foot motorhome. Had a blowout on an inside dualy. The tire did not come apart, caused no wheel well damage, and we had a safe stop. Tires were 10 1/2 years old. I keep my vehicle weight in limits, always clean and cover the tires when parked and keep them cold inflated to 80psi. I now have 6 new Michelin XPS LRE RIB Radials. Would not move my coach with any other brand of tire.
Initial Review, 12,000 Miles on Tires
December 02, 2007
REXAIR MOTORHOME OWNER
These are on my Rexair Motorhome by Rexhall, but the make/model selector does not list Motorhomes so I picked the closest one. The only problem is, Make sure you cover them up from the sunlight when parked or in storage, as this set, witch are originals, have cracked very badly around the tire to rim area. Other than that they are the best for my Money.
Follow-up Review, 99,999 Miles on Tires
May 16, 2009
Sorry I see I put the wrong Mileage, in my 1st Survey, and this is to correct that, also these are the Original one on this Motorhome. They are twice the price of others, but for the Service that one gets they are well worth the Price. As one will end up buying one or two sets of other Brands to just one set of these. And Like I said in the first survey, the only major item that has happen with this set, is my own fault, Cover them when Parked, so they do not get Sun Damaged. Also the Mileage Driven was wrong, as this site will not let you go over 100,000 mile's in the block that ask's you how many miles have your driven. Where my set has 120,000 milles on them, as that is the miles on the Motorhome. Sorry I did not see this problem till just now.
Now my understanding of my current tires is 6 years and they are done. The Michelin RIB tires seem to have a longer life.
Anyone have any experience in this tire and its service life??? Or a better tire to suggest? I have plenty of time so I am open to suggestions.
Thanks so much for any suggestions or comments.

Stan,
I and most who run the Michelin Tire run the LTX M/S2 LT225/75R16 LRE These are a steel tread and polysidewalls and provide a very good ride going down the road.
or
http://tinyurl.com/mmxew5r
The XPS tire is not necessary a good all season tire and not design for low temps/ice/snow. It is a commercial retread able tire with an all steel casing and will IMHO give you a very stiff ride and will rut run on grooved pavement.
It is my personal experience that all steel tires on your front will steer you back and forth. I have run all the combination from all steel to all polysidewalls to steel on the back and poly on the front over the last 14 years. I presently run Goodyears G149 All steel on the back and the Michelin LTX poly sidewall on the front and it rides very well. It is your choice to what you want to run and spend your money on. Some have run other brands of tire with good success, but only the polyside walls on the front.

If money is plentiful, buy them. I run my BF Goodrich Commercial T/A All
Season LRE's at least 10 years; they still look new after that time. Given
todays technology in tires, I don't subscribe to the 6 year rule; it's a
waste of money in my opinion. In August I bought 7 new tires thru Amazon;
paid $165 each with free shipping for the 225/75/16 BF Goodrich Commercial
T/A All Season LRE tires. Paid Les Schwab $9 each to mount and put beads
in for balancing. A lot of GMCers are running these tires and have been
for years; I have not heard about any tire problems with BF Goodrich. I
sold on Craigslist the old tires for $200 rather than leaving them with
Schwab to dispose of. JWID.

If you are a member of FMCA you can get a discount on Michelin tires at
participating dealers.

Stan,
These are the rules that I use for my tires and others may use other rules.
I forgot to mention that if you’re a FMCA member, which most are if they are a regional GMC club or a Full GMCMI member that FMCA offers a MichelinTire discount that can save you a good amount of money when you buy yours tires.
http://www.fmca.com/benefits/michelin-advantage.html
I run my tires a little longer as I use a 7 year limit typically. My coach is alway parked inside out of the weather when not in use and the tires come off the coach in the fall for inspection, cleaning, sealing on both sides with 303 Aerospace Protectant, polishing the rims and finally an application of the new ArmorAll Tire Dressing which is reapplied as necessary.
or
http://tinyurl.com/pj257o8
or
http://tinyurl.com/lzvxc62
We had a Goodyear Engineer in the GMCGL that said that the Goodyear Tires would run 10 years. A few of the tire makers that still manufacture tires in North America still put UV and other preservatives at the same levels as they did in past years. The tires that are manufactured off shore which a lot do cut cost my not adding as much. I ran a set of Firestone RTS 225/75R16 LRE tires almost 10 years. I still have them mounted on rims to move the coach (75 Avion) that is being renovated around the shop. Now remember my experiences will vary from others.
I have also run the BF Goodrich TA tire with good results also, and others are have good results with the Kumho Tires. There are other brands out there that are available at a lesser price, along with Kumho, Toyo, Kelly and Cooper and others.
Another rule of thumb: If you are coach user that put only 3K to 4K miles or less. Then I would suggest the lower cost tires that are available because you will age the tires out before you wear them out. I do 10K+ miles each year and use Michelin tires and Goodyears tires. The BF Goodrich TA tire is also a good tire for high milage drivers. Again these are my personal choices and other may vary!
Be sure to buy only a poly sidewall tire, especially for the front pair like I run an all steel on the rears because I had purchased them and never installed them on the coach that I had sold. Still rides vary good and was recommended by Dave Lenzi who had done Mega miles each year.
Not starting any tire wars here, just my opinion and personal usage over the last 14 years. Others out there will also post with their experiences and recommendation. Read them all and then make your choice. Good Luck!

Michelin makes that same recommendation in the RV section of their web site. I'm not going to go find it again as I have posted it several times here. Basically they are saying if you haven't worn it out in 10 years, replace it anyway due to time.
Michelin and others will not warranty a tire past 6 years so people say that as the life of the tire. Michelin meantime is saying 10 year life. You can bet that is very conservative to prevent law suits. There is no magic time bomb that goes off at 10 years and one month but after that you are on borrowed time and somewhere out there it will come apart? Is that time 12 years, or 13 years, or 20 years?
You are going to hate that model of Micheline tire. It rides and especially steers poorly.
I hate to see you spend $1500 for set of tires that you will hate. A lot of people use BF Goodrich Commercial TA's and like them. Rob M., and I, and a few others are using Kumho KL78s. Tire Rack has them and they are 1/2 the price of Michelin's. They are very good off road meaning on wet grass when camping and they handle nicely on the road. They are a rag wall tire. I was 300 feet off of the gravel road in a campground at the International Peace Garden where it rained for 3 days.
The guys at the hamfest there had 2 dually trucks lined up to tow me out of there. I fired up the GMC and drove out of there on my own leaving ruts as I went. So we never needed the dually tow trucks. They did have to tow some others out of there.

For a while the XPS rib was popular as it was recommended as the tire to use by Wes at Cinnabar. In short his theory was it was the only tire, being all steel, that had enough sidewall strength to support the GMC MH loading forces. As years went on most people found they rode hard and put a beating to the coach and occupants as well as having less than desirable foul weather manners. As tires evolved we now have E rated tires with polyester sidewalls, essentially giving the same load rating without the steel and it's drawbacks. One of those is if an XPS is run underinflated at all it is toast as the fatigued steel wires cannot be guaranteed not to rust and fail. As you drive and see all the the truck tire carcases on the road, you will notice that they are all steel tires. That's my observation. Something to think about. I run the older LTX M/S which are polyester and steel and ride nice. They look like new but are now approaching the 7 year window. However in questioning my tire shop (a private TireRack installer) he says to inspect them and if no cracks to just keep running them. They are always stored indoors away from UV so I hope he is correct.

Hello everyone....
I wanted to thank you all for your time and comments and information.
I know tire talk is all but talked out and I really had a struggle in my mind to actually bring this up. In my mind, TIRES have been the weak link to the GMC and I thought the 6 year available "SAFE" use was a had limit and was in concrete. Now it seems that may have changed. Even if I do try to go beyond the 6 year limit, ( old habits ) still linger and I will worry about the tires self destructing.
I found the tire I listed and the rV comments and thought they might be a long (longer) time life which in our case would certainly be a huge plus. Seems there are a few other choices to look at as well and I will be studying all this for awhile. I hope you won't mind if I contact you if I have concerns as I just don't know which way to look on my own. As one commenter said, the tire technology continues to change and it is such a shame that we cannot have a site for information that can be easily updated for just this use. Just my thoughts.
Thank you for your time and concern and information.
BTW... I don't know if anyone is interested in LED lighting anymore but I have come across a site that has a commercial LED module that is quite brite, 12vdc and run aobut 3.99 per module. They would be an easy upgrade are weather resistant so can be used outside. I have one that I have been experimenting with and it has passed every test I can think of including being outside in the weather. They are available in Cool white, Warm white, Red, Green, Blue, Yellow. And they would work fabulously under the cabinet for counter lighting. let me know if there is any interest.
GATSBYS Cruiser UPDATE: We are still waiting for the replacement manifold. Seems they are being send in for magna flux testing and cracks keep showing up.
This is an exciting time, I spent most the summer trouble shooting the fuel system to determine why the GMC was almost impossible to start and why the power loss. Found it to be the fuel supply SYSTEM. Upgrading in many places and should soon be ready to travel after the Winter. ( Thank You Jim Bounds for your continued support and help ).
Thank you everyone for your help and assistance.

This has been an interesting discussion. I saw in this month's FMCA magazine where Michelin dealers who also carry BFGoodrich tires will offer the FMCA discount for the BFG. Look in the letters to the editor, I think.
There is always the option of getting the cheapest tires you can find, and setting the two tire per year replacement schedule like Matt Colie does. Because of all the other things that can and do go wrong, I understand folks wanting to keep their tires on 10 years.
But after 5 years getting a Michelin tire center to inspect annually could be like going into a barber shop and asking the barber if you need a haircut. I used to have that contented confidence in Michelin tires. It lasted until the first blowout I had. a light truck tire, but 16.5 back in those days. Just what magic do they go through to inspect tires anyway? Sidewall cracks inside and out, inflation pressure, flat spots, slipped belts indicated by noise and or unusual wear, tread depth, poor emergency repairs, signs of having been run flat (sidewalls scuffed all around.). Can't think of much else. Some say dismount and look inside for loose rubber, an indication of having been run flat. If we do 100% of the driving, we could know whether the tires have been run flat, so that needn't be done.

GENE, of course I can provide a link.............
Interesting LEDs I have found at my favorite electronic Store.
If anyone is looking for interesting inexpensive LED modules, these LED modules can fit the need.
The product discription is as follows:
Rugged, high-luminosity 3-LED module suitable for indoor or outdoor, shelf, display or sign lighting. Operates on 12Vdc. Dimmable. Covered lens protects against humidity and sun damage. 50,000 hour, long-life LEDs. 3M® double-stick tape on back of each module for attachment to clean, flat surface. Also has a hole for screw mounting. Modules are linked on 2-conductor 18AWG zip cord, 161mm (6.5") center-to-center spacing. 3.75" wire between each module. Maximum string is 50 modules, 10 Meters (32Ft). Also available in cool-white, red, green, yellow and blue, CAT#s LS-123 (CW)(R) (G) (Y) (B). UL, CE.
Specifications: 12Vdc, 0.72W each module. String of 50 modules = 12Vdc, 36W, 3A.
They are priced at about $3.25 per module and can be bought on as a string.
These LEDs are Dimmable with the correct dimming device.
Uses for these LEDs can be for lighting, back lighting, exterior lighting, under cabinet lighting ( kitchen, bathroom), cubical ( storage area ) lighting. They are very versitile and whatever you dream up for a lighting need, these can fill the job. They will easily work off a 12vdc wall wart power supply for in house use or off a 12vdc battery supply. They are BRIGHT but if you need additional or a more intense light, you can add more modules. When you go to the site besure to read the customer reviews for more ideas.
If you have some of those older square type fixtures, this will afix inside them easily. VERY easy to use in most environments ( weather proof ) and because of the compact size will fit in tight places
These LEDs come in choice of colors:

LarrysRide wrote on Mon, 22 September 2014 22:03Hey JR Wright
What is the life of your tires now? Is it the 6 year limit or is it longer? It was the length of time that the reviewers gave that initially caught my eye, but the reviews seem to also rave about wear and ride.... it can be confusing when it is tire time.
It would be great to find a tire that can run longer than the 6 year time limit without fear of it self destructing and tearing up the GMC panels.....
Thanks for the comment. Like I said, I have time, probably won't get serious until next Spring but I need to find the tire source in preperation....
Have a great day.
Where did you come up with the 6 year limit? I would visit reputable tire manufacturers sites such as Michelin. 10 to 12 years is not uncommon if you subscribe to facts rather than hysteria.
