I have a quick question for you all.
Several years ago I bought new boots to cover the CV and slip joints on my steering shaft. I am not replacing the steering box and want to install the boots. Unfortunately, I see no way to install the upper boot that covers the CV joint. The upper clamp is so close to the 6 bolts on the CV joint that it appears that there is not enough room for the boot to fit let alone clamp it in place.
Does anyone have any pictures of their steering shaft with the boots installed? Maybe I am picturing the assembly all wrong.
Thanks,
Bob

Bob,
My boots appear to be the same as Kelvin's and so fit properly. For a
clamp, I used the same 1/4" Band-It clamps that are correct for the axle CV
joint boots. Clean, permanent, secure, and no protruding snags for my old
thin skin. :-)
During one of the times I had that CV off, I made a nylon plug and drove it
into the upper half of the shell to seal the top rain gutter. I haven't
had any more water intrusion. Probably no better than filling it with
silicone, but another alternative.
With the CV disassembled (Make DARNED SURE you mark the orientation of the
parts BEFORE disassembly) it makes sense to me to drill and top the top 1/2
for a Zerk fitting. I don't grease it often or much, but it's nice to be
able to give it a squirt now and then.

Well, I see where my misunderstanding was. I was trying to fit the top boot on the TOP of the steering shaft so that it covered the six bolt heads on the CV joint. I assumed that the boot was there to prevent water coming in from the top.
I can certainly see how it fits beneath the CV joint. Thanks!

Here is something that I contributed to Gene Fishers "GMC Information" site. found at:
http://gmcmotorhome.info/steering.htm#shaft
And reads as follows:
After reading a reference to a 4X4 shock boot being used by somebody, and looking at a picture of the whole shaft in a Caspro catalog, I went to NAPA where I opened every box that had a shock boot and found one that fit almost perfect. NAPA part # 63975 for $15.95. It covers the CV joint clear down to the zirk on the lower part of the shaft. The upper end was a tight fit and is held in place with the zip tie supplied with the boot. Lower part was just a little big so I fit the split in the boot around the zirk and put a zip tie on either side of the zirk, keeping it from sliding either up or down, but still leaving the zirk out for greasing.

One minor correction on the above regarding the zip tie. I found that the zip tie did not hold. couldn't get it tight enough to keep the boot from sliding off of the cv joint. I ended up using a hose clamp to secure it, but can see where Ken's suggestion of a CV joint clamp might be a better solution. One addition, if you drill and put in a zirk, use only grease designed to be used on CV joints. I used Mobile 1 grease and found that it would bind up once in a while. After reading about several others that had the binding problem, at their suggestion I switched to CV grease and the issue went away. JWID
