Hello All,

I have been looking for options on fixing up my paint job in a DIY manner. The paint below the belt line is pealing fairly badly on the passenger side. I know I will not be able to approach a professional paint job, just a 20 footer as they say. I have been looking at my options but I can't get my head around which paint to buy. I am obviously a beginner when it comes to automotive finishes. I have access to basic spay equipment and I'm not in a rush.

Here are some pictures

Any suggestions?

DIY as in "I just want to buy a gallon and put it in the sprayer?"

There is always Rustoleum for a single stage acrylic available at any local Home improvement:

http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/professional/high-performance-protective-enamel

http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=2331682&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1 This is a big thread on rolling, but it can be sprayed with good results.

If you would rather have a polyurethane finish, there is Brightside Boat paint:

http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/diy/products/finishes/brightside-polyurethane.aspx

And if you want the new hotness, there is Plasticoat - a sprayable plastic wrap that Jim Bounds and a few others are working on as an alternative coating. Check with Jim at GMC Coop if this interests you, as I think he is a dealer.

Daniel,

Armand Minnie just painted his coach in the storage yard he keeps it in. Maybe he will see your post and expound on the products and technique he used.

For what its worth the stripes on my coach were peeling in some areas much the same as yours appears to be. and the front stripes were completely faded and looked pretty sad.

I carefully masked them off with blue painters tape, and hit them with 3-4 coats of rustolium "hammered" finish in brown. The texture in the spray can filled in all of the small imperfections and even some of the larger areas where a lot of the stripe was missing.

It looks very good to me, and cleaned up the coach a lot visually. Not professional, but a solid 5 footer paint touch up, and it was 18 bucks for two cans.

Doing the entire lower half would take more than a few cans, but that paint and finish turned out nice. It should serve its purpose for more than a few years.

Sorry accidentally sent that last message early.

Is it possible to match OEM paint colors with the rustoleum? I have found some recommended single stage paints, but they only seem to come in a few prebottled colors.

most auto paint supply places, can color match, and hand you back spray cans that match.

I had a couple holes in the side of mine, I repaired, and painted that way, the color was not perfect(I have a real odd green), but it looks way better then it did.

1st can was $25 or so... I think if you order a few more it would be cheaper for the next few.

Daniel, have you seen this thread?

http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&goto=261900&rid=2555#msg_261900

I've painted a few cars. Auto paint and home depot paint aren't the same thing and won't hold up the same imo. I'm a big fan of Rustroleum hammertone paints. I paint my metalshaping machines with it. Some colors are available in quarts, black, silver, gray, and copper I believe. It dries very hard and lasts nice. Unfortunately it cannot be mixed to get a custom color.

The maintenance manual for your coach will have the Ditzler paint code. If you take that to a auto paint store and tell them you want acrylic enamel, you can get a cheap Harbor Freight HVLP paint gun and paint it yourself.

Wayne,

That sounds tempting. I have considered cutting vinyl and using that to freshen up the strip. We have a vinyl cutter and materials would be under 80 bucks.

Really, doing it right isn't that hard.
you do need equipment, air compressor, spray gun, but a single stage automotive paint job can be done quite nicely in the driveway.
I don't know why people buy cheap paint and then do all the same work just to have to do it again in a few years.

Rust oleum professional is acrylic enamel. However, if you want to get fancy you can get custom colors of acrylic enamel at Sherwin Williams. Be sure to ask for single stage. Some stores can match the color with an optical scanner.

Daniel,
Clean and buff an area on the coach that is the color you want. Drive it to an automotive paint store. They can match the color and provide it in either spray cans or conventional quart or gallon cans.

I bought a quart can of paint and a smaller can of hardener about $50. My son in law prepped, masked and painted the passenger side below the belt line in his driveway one morning between rain showers in Oregon. Used less than half of the quart.

If you have the compressor and spray rig it is faster and easier than spray cans. Prep is the same.

It turns out my buddy who is a manager at a Sherwin Williams can get me a discount at their automotive supply stores. Now that I have educated myself a little thanks to this thread I will head over there next week and pick out some supplies. Might be a couple weeks but I’ll let everyone know how it all turned out once I am done.

Daniel, make sure you sand down to solid paint. If you paint over flaking paint, your new paint will soon flake. To level the surface, use a high build urethane primer and prepare to sand...and sand...and sand.

Also, if you need to remove paint because it's that bad, is pealing, cracked etc, the razor blade is almost always the fastest, easiest and cleanest method out there.
You scrape the paint off like youre scraping a decal off a window. Use a long handled holder and you will have the coach stripped before you know it!
Seriously, it's easy, I did my vette that way and it has more inside corners than carter has liver pills. ( inside corners suck )
Then all you have to do is scuff the primer, lay down some high build sand smooth.

on a rare occasion you will scratch the primer with the razor edge, but less often than using paint stripper.

even more rarely the paint will be attached so well you can't scrape it off, in which case I'd ask why you want to.
there are Youtube videos showing it if you don't believe me Smile

If the paint is peeling carefully remove as much as you can with a razor blade tool until you find good adhesion. It sucks to spend time feathering a paint edge only to have it lift or peel when applying prime coats or top coats. Once you are relatively certain the paint you have not removed is stable an epoxy 2k sealer should be put down to lock down the old finish and provide a good bonding surface for the surfacer and topcoat layers.
