I had the pleasure of spending the day with Blaine and Diana today, installing wind wings and screens on my coach, plus giving it a good inspection on his lift. I'm sure many of you know this, but if you haven't dealt with them, I can tell you they are the most delightful, dedicated, responsible people you will ever meet.

I also had him examine my trailer hitch (non Blaine type), fully expecting him to recommend his hitch, which I was prepared to buy. Obviously, my hitch is not nearly as strong and well built as his, but he offered that it was probably adequate and didn't need to be replaced. I almost wish he had, so I could justify buying his hitch, because it is clearly superior.

I say all of this to say, if you have an occasion to need any of his products, you will be treated right, and have the best you can buy. (BTW, I receive no commission for this commercial. Smile) I just want to recommend one of our great suppliers.

You are absolutely correct on everything you said about Diane and Blaine. I have spent a few nights at their home. Most honest and respectable couple among our group of coach owners. Very hospitable, taking me into their home when I was not in my coach and giving me a bed. I stayed at Blaine's even when our daughter used to live near by. Just a great couple to know, whether you do Buisness with them or not. Thanks for your post Dave.

We had a chance to stop by their place years ago while they were holding a work Rallye. I still would love to have his work space!

Agreed that they are great folks and I love his hitch on my coach.

Blaine was telling me about a lawyer in Chicago that completely rebuilt his coach heat and A/C system. Is that you? He was exclaiming over how effective it was.

He was probably talking about Mark Wall, whom we haven't heard from here in
several years. Does anyone know why?:

Ken,

I don't believe I've ever seen Mark's HVAC redesign before. He did some very nice work. I wonder how it compares to your setup?

My gosh, what a project! I can see how Blaine was impressed by its effectiveness. Wish he would do mine . . .

and here's his write up about it...

Actually - he probably made that new box afterwards...

Yea. Big project. I'm actually considering it because my dash AC is pretty much worthless.

Larry,

I was a little surprised when I looked up that album: It's not what I
remembered. He went through a number of iterations before getting to that
design, including just moving the blower to the front panel of the HVAC
box. He also added outlet ducts to the cockpit side of the box. He also
sealed all the leaky dash outlet ducts to quit dumping so much air behind
the dash.

While my dash and HVAC redesign appears more extensive than Mark's, I think
he put more work into it, and probably gets better results. Certainly his
beautifully integrated under-sofa evaporator and ductwork to overhead is a
big improvement over anything I've done.

There are still a few things I should do to improve my system: Add a
bigger blower (my squirrel cages are only 2-1/2" OD), finish connecting all
the vacuum operated doors, and connect the temperature control lever to an
air mixture door (temp control now is by fan speed and thermostatic control
of the compressor clutch). But it's so effective with those deficiencies
that I haven't much incentive to work on it. :-)

Yeah, now that's what I remembered (probably because I was responsible for
his presenting it!). :-)

Pretty soon Y'All are going to be having to remind me of my name!

Now that my tired old memory's been stirred up, I remember some more about
the GMCEast rally at which Mark presented that paper: Immediately before
it, he got a transmission from Manny. During a seminar, I got a cell phone
call from Mark. He'd taken his coach out for a test drive and was stuck
beside the road unable to change gears.

Manny was sitting right beside me, so I grabbed him and we went to Mark's
rescue. He was indeed stuck on the non-existent shoulder of a very narrow
country road. We used the S-10 that I was driving to push the GMC down the
road a little way into a farmer's barn driveway. For some reason that I
don't remember, I didn't stay around for the following festivities, but
Manny did his magic. There in the barnyard, he pulled the transmission pan
and corrected the damaged shift lever. Seems that during shipping the
shift lever had been knocked in-board, shearing the pin which attaches the
shift rod to the internal lever -- or something like that. At any rate,
that incident is the reason Manny now ships his transmissions in a plywood
crate.

Mark had job change not long after that, and I've never heard from/of him
again -- sadly.
