I've heard you can use a Harley V-Twin coil.

Fred,
There are several options that you can use. Look at the following photo Album

The following coils should work also.

Fred: I think that someone with a lot more Karma than me, will answer with using a Harley Davidson V Twin Coil, so I will let them give you the specifics. I have not needed to do this myself yet, and therefore have not tried it to confirm that it works. (I do remember from the NET, that it has been used successfully.) My Onan actually runs OK and it is easy for me to service with my experiences. (Many years ago I owned and operated a Small Engine, and Lawn & Garden Shop)

BUT I HAVE ANOTHER IDEA!!.

That original Onan Ignition is not really as robust as modern Technology ignition systems, and that is why it causes some people problems.

( A little preview here) I have been working on an ignition system for my Onan using a multi Spark Capacitive Discharge Ignition Box. The coil I will be using for it will be a Coil Pack from a '95 to 2003 sunfire/ cavalier 2.3 engine. That same engine and coil pack is used in a million or more cars and many GM Applications. ( Finding it at a "Mens Mall or "Pick and Pull" should make it pretty cheap. (It was for me) The coil pack is part of a wasted spark ignition system that is used on most of the engines in those years. The Onan also uses a wasted spark configuration and that is why there is only one Coil and two leads. (I won't bother to explain how wasted spark works at this time unless Im asked)

The GM Coil Pack actually has a higher output than the Onan or the HD V-Twin Coil and Wiring it up is really quite easy

All That being said However, It does not fit in the same place as the original Onan Coil, and would need to be custom fitted to the Onan.

You did Ask for cheap, not easy: Right . ;>)

Cheap often means that you need to have some background knowledge and put some extra effort in. Just finding a new Onan Coil and replacing it, is the easiest!! So far my intent is simply satisfying my curiosity of how good I can make that ignition system. (notwithstanding the very good job others are doing)

I promise to share the results of my project, but there are a lot of issues that keep bumping its priority down the list.

Cheers!!

Small correction.

The coils come from a 2.2 Liter Engine not 2.3 (2.3 is ford)

Call Jim Bounds.

I have heard that he has a grave yard of removed Onans.

Why do you think that your coil is bad?

Fred installed a borrowed known good one, and Mr. Onan woke up and worked. He had high resistance on his coil, as I remember about 3 times the expected amount.
Nice to have GMC friends near by.

My coil measures 44k ohms on the secondary and I get no spark.

I found this site. Scroll down to the one with the yellow wires. The only problem is if it will fit into the hole. I ordered one (Onan replacement70 bucks) and it wouldn't fit and will send it back. I'll call on this one and ask first.

OK, I just wanted to make sure he really had a bad coil before he went and bought a new one. I still say call Jim Bounds or Sirum and ask for a used one. I would rather have an OEM one if possible. Now if he had electronic ignition then I might look for a higher voltage one.

I replaced mine with the harley coil. Same basic shape, just a wee bit larger in the body - requires a little dremel work on the mount to make the hole larger - not real hard to do, and the part is easier to find than the onan coil. Due to the current state of replacement parts manufacturing though, I don't expect it to last as long - such is life.

Looks like somehow all the links disappeared from your post.

Just a thought. Couldn't you use any round 12 volt coil of the approximate size if you spliced the coil ends of your spark plug wires together?

G'day,

I GA-RON-TEE this coil will work and to prove it I will put my money where my mouth is!

http://www.jpcycles.com/product/3000140

If anyone buys one and it doesn't work I will pay them TWICE what they paid for it!

Obviously if it is a defective part that statement doesn't count!

If you're really penurious do an eBay search and you'll find a used one like JR installed for $14.95 including shipping!

If you decide to go the HD route you need to make sure of two things:

1) That the coil is for DUAL fire and not SINGLE fire
2) That the coils is for 12VDC - early Harleys had 6VDC coils

Rob,
Thanks for the information, the coil that you suggested was the last on my list, I think. The info on the type of coil specs is great too! Comment on the coil used in the photo album? I posted that because of the album and not personal experience. I know that you are an experienced Harley guy.

It is my understanding that you cannot do that. It overloads the points. I read that on the Smokestack forum. You can wire 2 coils in series and make that work but you would have to locate them somewhere and lengthen the wires.

Fred,
There are several options that you can use. Look at the following photo Album

The following coils should work also.

There may be others.

Looks like somehow all the links disappeared from your post.

Just a thought. Couldn't you use any round 12 volt coil of the approximate size if you spliced the coil ends of your spark plug wires together?
