Hamilton I changed oil for 5 years and can't tell you what the difference is.
If I were to take an uneducated guess though, the oil may contain some sort of conditioner for rubber seals, or possibly a little Naptha which can swell rubber in moderation which would help stop or prevent a leak.
My suggestion was if you bought a new car, run it on conventional oil for 15-20k miles, then switch to synthetic or a synthetic blend.

edit, The high mileage oil is recommended for vehicles with over 75,000 on the clock. I think it is more of a marketing ploy than anything else.

if your old car isn't leaking oil or burning i would just keep using the same stuff. my 20&25 year old Toyota's don't leak or burn oil and each have 250000 miles on the clock are they considered old cars? I just change oil at around 3000 miles and use what ever i have on hand 10 30,10 40,5 40 they don't seem to care.
