I seem to remember a way to keep the engine battery charged while in shore power but can't find it anywhere. Anyone know how to do this?

Here is what I did, clamp with cable from the Coach battery side of the Boost Relay, I can disconnect and store here (photo below) when not in use. I also strategically made the cable short enough so that if the clamp were to fall from its storage spot it can not contact a ground.

Jared's idea is a good one. I don't need to do that because my boost switch is a locking one (so all I need to do is to leave the switch in the boost position when I'm on shore power).

WOW Ray, quite a price tag on that...... I do like the description in the link, Does yours replace the factory battery isolator altogether? Seems as though it does the same thing the converter could do though when plugged into shore power using the method I use.

I just cut the clamp off of a 100 amp battery charger we had at work that decided to take a dump.

Not certain if my battery isolator works as it was disconnected when I bought the coach. I basically use this clamp to keep the engine battery charged while I am listening to the radio.

If you have one of the "free" Harbor Freight multi-meters or a real one, checking the isolator is easy. Disconnect the wires from the isolator ( hint, label or photograph wires), set it on diode checker.
One lead to alternator input, touch lead to either output posts, if it makes noise, that side is good. Get noise from both sides, the isolator is good. No noise, switch leads before you give up.
Gene's combiner across isolator is the easy way to go.

I seem to remember a way to keep the engine battery charged while in shore power but can't find it anywhere. Anyone know how to do this?

A simple jumper between the two 12v sides of the house and chassis battery will do the job for charging--just don't forget to remove it before starting. The boost switch energization works but does draw some current to keep it energized.

The point of the thread was to explain how to keep coach and chassis batteries charged while plugged into shoe power. While being plugged into shore power I can't see how the batteries are "discharging"

Correct - they cannot discharge while on shore power. However it is very easy to forget the jumper is on, Then later, when not on shore power, the two batteries can discharge together. Say when you are boon-docking. How anyone chooses to do this is up to them. For me, I can guarantee you I would forget to disconnect the jumper so I choose to use a combiner.

I have large black zip-tie that hangs on the rearview mirror, as soon as I attach the jumper I hang it. That way I will remember to disconnect the jumper. String around the finger kind of thing.

I got the idea from my travel trailer TV antenna, came with a placard (that says lower your antenna) to hang from the rearview mirror of the tow vehicle. Soon as we park the TT I reach up into the visor pocket and hang it. Reminds me to lower my antenna before heading home.

Works for me so far!!
