If so I would like to know what your process was, what type of paint you used, and finally where you satisfied with the result?

Thanks, Jared

Do you mean the Inside plastic or the outside Al frames?
I painted one outside Al frame with a semi-gloss rattle can spray. First, I wiped the Al down with brake cleaner to remove 38 years of stuff (old car wax, bird dropping, traces of unknown stuff).
I used ColorPlace #21049 Black Satin, from Wal-Mart. Very close match for the finish, color and texture on my new windows from Gene Dotson. Appears to be holding up very well in the Hot Alabama Sun.
Mask everything like crazy.

Tom,

He means the outside, he has a 77 and it has the late style windows that don't use plastic internal surround they have a "rubber
strip" that goes into a slot (or something) to cover the edges of the internal wall.

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob is correct, the inside edges are a white rubber strip that is held in place by friction, kind of a PITA to get back on too.

How long ago did you paint your frames Tom? Did you primer them or just clean them? How many coats did you use?

Thanks guys!!

Just used this on my frames...

http://www.rustoleum.com/en/product-catalog/consumer-brands/flexidip/flexidip

Took about 6 or 7 coats but it dries very quickly. Put it on very light or you will get blobs. If you do screw up, it's easy enough to just peal it off and re-spray.

Looks awesome.

I just taped around the frame and the window just for ease in cleanup. It wipes off very easily if you get it on the side of the motorhome or the windows even a week after spraying.

Sprayed about three very thin coats. Brake cleaner did the degreasing and deglossing. Did it late last Fall. Holding up very well. Better than expected considering the low cost and ease of the use of the product.

I did my window frames about 8 years ago. They were sad looking, most if not all of the paint had either peeled or faded away. A couple of the frames looked like they were virgin aluminum, they were so faded.

I used a good sealant around the frames. Especially look at the tops. All my sealant was gone and there were deep crevaces between the body and the frame. I think OEM used some kind of window putty to seal but mine was gone.

I used a fairly fine grit sand paper and sanded down the window frame, to rough it up and get anything off that washing didn't.

I taped it off and used RUSTOLEUM Satin Black RATTLE CAN. It goes on easy, took about two good coats. When all was said and done, IT LOOKED FANTASTIC. Lasted up till last year when I spotted a spot or two that needs to be touched up. I'll probably do them all again just to get fresh paint on them.

I am considering experimenting with a couple of brands of paint, Rustoleum was close to the top of the list, along with Krylon.

Did you sand down to bare frame (removed all traces of old finish)?

RUSTOLEUM gives you a bit longer time to work with the paint. KYLON dries fast and is hard to keep the wet edge. On the frames it probably does not matter because the area you are working on is so thin. If you work on a panel you will know what I am talking about when I say keeping the wet edge.

This new product that has everyone looking, PLASTI DIPP, is interesting and has a matt type finish, not shiney. In most cases, there is no sanding. Just wash the area to be painted, wipe with pre-dip, tape off of course, then spray with DIPP. Remove any tape from edges that are exposed or seen, remove that tape immediately or the DIP will cure quickly and when you pull the tape you will pull the DIP with it. Then your only hope is to run a razor edge along the tape edge to cut the dip then pull the tape.

Dip comes in various colors including BLACK and its big time advantage is you can take it off if you don't like it. Unlike Silicone sealant which at one time everyone in the world used for leaks, has to be cut and scraped off and it still affects the paint. Dip will not become the problem that Silicone Sealant did, thanks to different properties of adheasion. Might give it a try.

My windows most likely had not been painted since manufacture and there just wasn't much left. I looked at what was left and determined most of it was stable. I did go down to metal or very close in most places but the idea is to rough it up so the new paint has something rough to stick to. You only have to go to bare metal if your paint is just bad and you can't use it as a foundation. Where it has flaked, make sure you scrape it to get any paint that is lifted but has not fallen off yet. I found a place or two where the paint looked good but then I scraped, a large piece just lifted off. sand the edges of the paint down so it feathers and looks like a single smooth paint application. Remember with spray paint, everything will show and if you use glossy paint, high shine, it will show twice as bad, like magnification. What makes it a bit of a challenge is the frame metal has contours so you can't really use a block, but a rubbery block or sponge seems to make it easier to sand down, esp if you are sanding down to metal.

Good luck.

I used a self-etching primer and trim topcoat and it failed within a year here in AZ. From what I can tell this was a problem GMC tried to tackle for years. The only thing I can think of is powdercoating.

AZ sun has no mercy.

Try some of the plasticoat. being a cheap SOB, I used it on a daily driver BMW to black out the window trim. I did not invest much in prep work, just shot it and forgot it. Other than a sharp edge that could have used a few more layers and a spot where the subsurface of the trim failed, it has held up well in the SC sun for about 8 years. IMHO it is a very cheap, and remarkably durable, fix for black window trim.

The best part is you can apply in place. If it doesn't work, you can peel it off and still disassemble and powdercoat.

I should have bought stock in this stuff 7 years ago...

Jared,

I painted the frames on my 76 Palm Beach over 2 years ago. Used automotive trim paint; I think SEM was the brand. Available at paint supply stores.
Masked, sanded lightly and sprayed. Followed directions on the can. Result was great and still looks great after 3 summers outside in the hot Cal Central Valley sun.
May have applied primer to some areas that were bare aluminum.

I did the frames on the right side of my coach several (maybe 5) years ago with Krylon Fusion in a semi flat black. They have held up well. It was a lot of work masking and painting them, but well worth it. The rest of my frames need to be painted as well, but I have been busy doing other projects and have been putting it off. When I DO get around to doing them, I will use SEM Trim paint from my local auto finish supply store. After painting them I sealed them to the coach body with black RTV as recommended by Jim Bounds. Jim sells a special low VOC silicone sealant that he uses on his coach refinishes

Awesome.

Not a member of first Fives, because mine was a second five... Very Happy Did hang out on Mye28, though.

I am a member of Senior Six Registry, and we crashed a Fiver Fest in NC once, though.

Also crossed paths with Peter Florence a few times between Senior Six and Club events.

The E3, E12 and E28 have a lot of overlap - parts and owners.

I haven't heard Peter Florences name for years!!!

I would still have mine but loaned it to my sister back when I was 22 and she overheated it and cracked the head. Could have fixed it but didn't have the cash.

I Did. I have a 77.

I lightly sanded them, then cleaned them with water and alcohol to ensure they were dry. I then masked as usual, and painted with Automotive Gloss Black Bumper Paint.
I also painted the recessed gap around the cockpit windows.
